Have been unemployed for almost a year. Was told overqualified by Mcdonald's. If you can believe that. Was told too old for a job working with children. I am at wits end now. I will be homeless soon if I don't find something.

I've had good luck with medical transcription, been doing it for 3 years now. I have more info here:

If you look like you're under 50 and can afford it, you can fight age discrimination by doing things to look younger, like subtly dyed hair. If you don't wear glasses, you can get frames with plain plastic "lenses" that camouflage wrinkles around the eyes.

Failing that, I think the best way to avoid age discrimination is to apply to places with an older clientele. Ironically, I think a 55-year-old might have a better chance for a job working with children, at least young children. In some situations, a grandmotherly type would be preferred to an energetic-looking 42-year-old.

I would check out temp agencies like Kelly Services or Manpower. They can help you find something that might be temp to start out with but goes to permanent. Also I have found that you make more money going thru a place like that than you would working at McDonald's, retail, etc. My other suggestion would be to check out malls. Retail places (crappy places to work but will fill the immediate need) will be looking for holiday help soon. Good luck!!

The problem in such situations is that you half expect things to go wrong. Stay confident. The world wasn't built in a day. And not just with newbies. Experience definitely counts and there will be people who appreciate the kind of experience you do have. Don't wait for openings. Go looking for jobs that suit YOU.
