I don't know. When I found out Santa wasn't real, I got really mad at my parents for lying to me. If I ever had kids, I wouldn't have them believe in Santa.

The same reason people lie about Jesus, God, Allah etc etc. It's what most humans do to cope with things they don't understand. The Easter bunny was originally a pagan symbol of rebirth in the spring, I believe. The Christian church hijacked Christmas from the pagans too. If we all have a time to celebrate each other and love one another, where's the harm?

I wouldn't describe it as lying. It is being creative and adding fun to a childs life , teaching them to dream, be imaginative and most of all the excitement of anticipation and something to look forward to.

Anyone who has had the pleasure in seeing a childs eyes light up in wonder and delight when father christmas has left them presents under the tree....

Plus side as a parent is that Father Christmas etc at a certain time of the year can easily replace the naughty step ...... someone is watching you!!

You are only young for a short space of time and should be allowed to enjoy it before all the mundane 'seriousness ' and responsibility sets in

What is the harm??

I've always wondered this myself. Perhaps because they think it is harmless fun, perhaps because they want to encourage their child's imagination, perhaps because people are just basically liars.

In any case, I, for one, do NOT lie to my child about these things...he is well aware of the truth about Santa Claus, the Easter bunny, the Tooth Fairy, etc...

There is no harm in children having a sense of imagination tied with having fun. It doesn't stop there does it? What about spiderman, superman, batman and robin etc etc. Again, characters that children want to believe in. I wouldnt get too serious about it all. Lifes too short.

I don't. I tell my children the true meaning of both holidays. When they were little to help them understand we'd have a cake and sing happy birthday to Jesus on Christmas. They get presents, but not from "santa".

Every noticed how santa and satan are an awful like alike in spelling..lol

Life can become more serious as you get older, school, work, family etc. Why not allow a child to have little dreams when they are young. When you are older I bet most people have their dreams-winning the lottery etc.
