getting an appointment to any Military Academy is harder than getting accepted into some of the finest colleges in the nation.

your High School grades must be phenomenal, and they better be in Advanced classes. It also helps to be active in at least one Sport, as well as other extra curricular activities. If you are going into your Senior year of high school, you are pretty much too late to get into the next Class.

Other paths to Commissioning include ROTC in College, or the Army's Warrant Officer Program, where, if you qualify, you can go directly from High School to become a Helo Pilot.. no 4 year degree necessary.

Depends upon what type of career you are looking for. The rigors of a service academy aren't necessarily for everyone. R.O.T.C. on a university campus might be more suitable for certain folks. Although, academy grads do seem to have an inside track for career path choices, especially in aviation. Some of the best officers I ever served under came from the enlisted ranks by way of the " Green-to-Gold " program. or you could enlist and find your way like that. Just be realistic about what you want from the service.

You have to get an appointment. That entails a helluva lot more than just sending them your H.S. transcripts. A Military Academy is helpful, but knowing what you want to do as a job, get a degree from the best university with that major. Then pick the best branch of service for that degree. Then only accept the job classification that you have picked.

I was an Army Officer and West Point is no longer looked at like it once was. The bulk of officer come from ROTC and OCS. Your commission is the same for all three sources. It matters more now how you preform as a Company Commander, than where you go commissioned from.

The only advantage to going thru the point is that you receive your BS paid for by the federal government! Everything else remains the same except for the harassment you will receive in between. Why make things more difficult for yourself, take the easy route and go OCS and get your BS from a decent school that is easy to enroll in and graduate.

The promotion rate tends to be higher for West Pointers. If you're serious, get above average grades in high school, participate in extra activities and you'll need a letter from a congressman.
