40% of English vocabulary comes from Norman vocabulary, a dialect of French centuries ago. So many words are simular. However French has this thing called liason, in which when you speak, words merge with each other in speech. For example:

Nous ouvrons, is pronounced, noo zoo vroN. the s on Nous, is pronounced in the next syllable.

Also there is no stress on pronunciation. Which means you may have a hard time understanding where a word begins or ends in a sentence.

French may be more difficult for you to learn than Spanish. There are many complicated sounds that from an English speaker, it is hard to form the sounds. There are 4 nasal vowels. In the word "un" the n is not pronounced but it changes the sound of the u, so to speak.

Spanish, or Castellano, has 5 vowels which are easy. There are only a few sounds that you would have to learn to produce, the j, ll, rr, and the b or v.

You can speak Castellano with millions of people in the Western Hemisphere, from America to Chile. French is mainly spoken in France and Africa. If you plan on going to Africa or France learn French. If you plan on going to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, or anywhere on the South American Continent, learn Castellano.

My advice is to use "The Berlitz Self-Teacher French" or "The Berlitz Self-Teacher Spanish". Read the chapters out loud, over and over again until you've mastered each short chapter. You will learn to "think" in the language, and that's the only way to learn a language, by shutting your mind down to English, and only thinking in the other language.

Depends where you are. If you're in Canada then French is the choice cause it's the official second language of this country, if you are living in the Southern part of US then it would be smart of you to learn Spanish.

French and Spanish are similar. I have never learned Spanish but because I'm French I can find my way around in Spanish.

French is a tough language to learn, but the benefits are almost unlimited as almost all the acadamic and technical literature of the world have been translated into French. So French is a better bargain.

i would totally recomend learning to speak spanish. it is always a good thing to learn a second language. both languages are easy to learn, but go with spanish. with the way things are going now, people are going to have to know how to speak spanish, not french. you would most likely not have to use french unless you go to france. but considering how many mexican immigrants and spanish speaking people we have in this country, spanish is a neccessity. i am white and i live in a community that is 80% mexican and 60% of those people speak spanish. 40% of those people only speak spanish. so it would be great to know how to speak spanish. especially because its really hard to get a job if you dont speak it because so many people dont speak english.

personally spanish wqs easier for me to learn. especially because with french you have to produce a nasal accent. i took spanish first and then french. once you learn one though the other comes almost natural. the languages are both derived from latin so they are very simlar. like when saing "library". in french you say "bibliotheque" pronounced biblioteck. in spanish you say "biblioteca" pronounced bibliotecka.

spanish.. it's easy to learn. i learned it on my own while taking only a couple of classes in high school. once you learn the configuration of the verbs, it becomes really easy then.
