It is not whether it is Vista or Xp that is the issue.

There is a new version of Word called Office 2007. If it is a Word2007 file, then it will not open on the old Office XP and need to be saved in an earlier version.

I did it without any trouble at all - after I instaled Word on the laptop. I was using Office XP ( which includes Word) and it was all very easy. Vista is a nasty operating system though.
