I'm about to have a baby any day now and don't want to mess with trying to scape it off and everything. It's an old house and there would probably be a lot of repair work needed.

I want to paint the ceilings throughout the house silver (shiny not flat grey) except the living room where there is an orange, yellow and blue sunset mural, but think it will look funky with the bumps on ceiling. Could I mix it with another color or glaze over it? The kitchen is bright orange and the rest of the house is painted either medium/dark grey or blue and I have silver accents throughout house. All the trimwork is dark walnut wood stain.

well the popcorn has a VERY thick coat of white paint over it so I don't think it will be falling off...i had a contractor here who said because of the thick paint if i tried to scrape it, there would be a lot of holes/etc. to repair

DO NOT PAINT OVER THE POPCORN!. If you do you will never be able to remove it...unless you hire someone to come in with very expensive sanders or you will have to do what I did - Have them run new drywall across the ceilings. Removing popcorn isn't that hard, but I wouldn't want to start the project in your current state.

Leave the popcorn for now and worry about it in a year or so. Before you remove it send a couple of samples off to be tested for asbestos. I found a lab in CA that was reasonably priced and gave me results within a week.

i dont know whether you have ever tried to paint over popcorn but for me it didnt turn out so well..... the popcorn in the ceiling just came off on the roller.. it was a huge mess. then we tried the paint gun to spray on the color but the popcorn just fell down staining everything. it was paint and popcorn all over the floor.... we had no choice but to scrape it off then paint... hope it goes way better for you.
