What do you THINK it means? People who don't know the past are doomed to repeat it... that is why Americans make the same mistakes over and over... it's because they don't know history... their own... or anyone elses.

Well in terms of world history and society, it means that in order to progress as a civilization, one must understand where you came from. Cultural norms are like living organisms- they evolve over time depending on social climate. A more personal interpretation might also mean that you are the sum of your life experiences...you approach every situation in a certain way, because of what the past has (or has not) taught you.

I would say it helps with your people skills. People act the way they do because of something in the past. So if someone says something really extremem about an issue, it is probably because of something that happened in the past. There are quite a few times I have found this to be true.
For example, my normally calm friend punched a guy because he was dressed as a cigarette and proclaiming that if you touched him, you would get lung cancer and die.
Her mom had cancer.
My teacher was supposed to go to jury duty over a guy breaking parole, and said she would lock him up for as long as possible.
Her daughter was killed by a guy who broke his parole.

I think of that when I think of people, If you don't know what they have been through, you can't understand why they act the way they do. I know has a much deeper meaning that's just what I was thinking.

History keeps repeating itself. It means we should learn from our past experiences or else we will repeat our mistakes.

I SAY THAT IN GENERAL WE HAVE TO RESEARCH THE PATTERN OF OUR OWN FAULTS , SO THAT WAY WE MOVE FORWARD IN A POSITIVE DIRECTION RATHER THAN TO EPITOMIZE OUR OWN DECISIONS OF WHAT LIES AHEAD OF US! SEE MOST PEOPLE SHOULD NOT SEE THE FACT THAT BEING NOSTALGIC IS A WAY TO REFLECT BUT RATHER A WAY TO UNDERSTAND OUR PAST TO HELP DETERMINE OUR FUTURE. I SAY THAT THOSE OF YOU WHO LOOK TO THE PAST TO MAKE YOURSELVES HAPPY ARE AT FAULT THEMSELVES.
IT IS UP TO YOU TO MAKE THE NEXT STEP HAPPEN THAT DOES NOT REFLECT THE PAST, BECAUSE THEN IT TRULY IS HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF! "
