It didn't used to be this bad. Now, nearly every question I ask is met with "answers" like "k" - which they "fill in later."

Is anyone else irritated by this trend?

Everything is a competition. People think that by being the first answer they stand to get more thumbs up, or atleast more attention.

As long as the people actually sit and WRITE a thoughtful answer, no it doesn't really bother me. Let's face it - people will often only read the first couple answers and a well thought out response doesn't always jump off your fingertips.

[EDIT] The only time I use a placeholder is if someone has asked a factual question about theology where I want to make sure I give them an accurate answer. If it's just "what do you think about..." I wouldn't bother.

I'm irritated by it. I usually add to/modify my answers quite a bit just because I think of something else I want to add, I decide to censor myself, and because I'm a bit of a perfectionist and want to make sure it is worded just right. But I would never just put in a letter or symbol in order to preserve my place on top. I know that a lot of people are too lazy to read all the answers, but if the questioner is really interested in the best answer he/she will pick the best one whether it's the first or the fiftieth.

I think there is a place for it (pardon the pun).

If a question is asked about which I have particular interest and I wish to give a thoughtful and detailed answer, I will use a placeholder.

There is no reason that the first thoughtful answer to a question should come after ten snarky ones. (And there will always be ten snarky ones).

If I am going to take the time to give a thoughtful answer to a question on evolution (a subject matter I have a lot of knowledge in) I want it to be above (literally) the insults.

This is a reason I don't answer meaningless questions, in the sense of being just plain stupid and written by adolescent kids.
If it is a well thought of question, even funny, the asker will read it and so are most of the interested answerers.
And than again hey...its just kids.

I wasn't aware of "placeholders," but now that you mention it, I've sometimes seen posts like that and I've thought, "WTF?"

I just write what I feel ... and usually end up at the bottom, 20 minutes later. Oh well ...

Oh well missed the top so, anyhow this has to do with voting. Point chasers go to vote don't read the answers and vote for position 1. I think the vote section should be removed and questioners forced to choose best answer, or, no best answer given.

It's all a big game.... they probably think that the first answer has a better change of being the best answer, so they reserve the slot. But they might get trolled by someone reporting non-answers.

What ticks me off is when they type in "k" and come back in 5 minutes with the answer I gave halfway down the page.
Jokes and Riddles section got so bad with that, so I don't even go there now.

It's not a recent trend, it's been going on for a long time.
