I've brewed my own ales before. It's worth the money and time, but it is not cheap. My average cost for just the ingredients was $40 and that produced roughly 48 - 12 ounce bottles. A good book to get you started on supplies, hints and recipes is "Homebrewing Guide" by Dave Miller
Some advice - look for glass carboys at garage sales. they aren't cheap new, but are much better than the 5 gallon plastic buckets that come with beginner kits. Secondly, you hear this a million times; SANITIZE EVERYTHING. If you don't, you'll get some funky flavors in the final product.
Good Luck.

Number one, it's not cheaper to make your own beer when you add up all the costs of ingredients. You'll need at least a couple of glass carboys for fermentation (or one plastic ale pail to go with one glass carboy), a bottle brush, a carboy brush, bottles or a keg, a funnel, a five gallon or larger stock pot, food grade clear plastic hosing, stoppers for the carboys/ale pale, air lock....you'd be best off to go to a brewer's supply shop and purchase a beginner's kit. This will set you back about 130 bucks unless you can buy a kit used off of craig'slist or something like that. Since you're a beginner, you'll probably start out with a beer "kit". Sort of like a beer recipe in a box. You'll get a can or bag of malt syrup, maybe some adjunct grains for steeping, a couple of packets of hops, yeast and some corn sugar for priming when you bottle. In my town, these kits can run as cheaply as 25 bucks but can go much higher, depending on the beer. Home brewers don't tend to get into this hobby because it's cheap- they do it because they like to be able to craft their own high quality beer. It would probably be cheaper for you to switch to buying cases of high alcohol, cheap beer. I have an alcoholic friend who used to buy "hi-brau" by the case...don't know what brand he's into now. Good luck.
