You are correct.
However, the Catholic church teaches that Jesus is God.
So, if Mary gave birth to Jesus, she must have given birth to God.
Does it make sense to you?
Me neither.

Mary was a chosen vessel to give birth to Jesus, the Son of God.... Mary is not nor was the 'mother of God'... she was a vessel, just like others who have gone and done God's will.... Moses, Joshua, Abraham... Miracles happened thru many people and I am pretty sure that when Mary gave birth to Jesus, she was more humbled than anyone.... because she knew fully who Jesus was and is. She in no way would want to be called holy or be praised or even honored. God alone is worthy of that....

This is so because the Catholic church , in a attempt to keep people in the ignorance, decided to make their own little bible called Catechism, where initiates are indoctrinated in such beliefs, they also teach there is only one church, the Catholic and Apostolic Roman. You have to say this in prayers as pledge or oath of allegiance.
Even when in Revelations is spoken to 7 churches.
I loved my priests, and the nuns who taught me at school, their good advices to go by in the world. But little did I know about the past and present of the secrets of the Vatican system. I came to conclude that the Catholic Church is only an earthly organization and the biggest cult there is.
This is an adaptation of the old Pharisees ESSENES, "Watikim" and "Holy Ones." See the similarity with the word "Vatican"
So I guess filtering the Pharisee ESSENES who dressed in white, with the power that the other Pharisees had in influencing kings, they took on the opportunity to reform religion in a way they could influence Christian Jewish, Pagans, Romans and Greeks.
Smart move I would say. unfortunately everything will come to the light.

In answer to all of your answers here with this question.
If Jesus and "God" are one, who did Jesus pray to?
After Jesus died, who resurrected him?
Why did Jesus say, "The Father is greater than I"?
I believe that Mary is now in heaven, and I feel sorry that she has to hear and see all of this falsehood connected to her.
She was not the Mother of God, she was the vessel God used to produce his son in human form. From every woman that has ever been born she was chosen, and that fact should never be taken away from her.

The Bible clearly states in too many places and ways to quote that Jesus is the son of God. The Catholic hierarchy seem to have arrived at various conclusions that conflict directly with specific information in The Bible. I do not wish to insult them, but I truly do not understand why.

It refers to the Holy Trinity, ie., 'Mary conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Lk 1:26-38 and Mt 1:18-25) Through her, Jesus Christ--second person of the Holy Trinity, one-in-being with the Father, and true God from true God--entered this world, taking on human flesh and a human soul. Jesus is true God and true man. For this reason, sometime in the early history of the Church, Mary was given the title "Mother of God."

Catholics believe that Jesus is God. It's part of Trinitarian theology. Mary is the mother of Jesus, Jesus is God, therefore Mary can be called the mother of God.
(Waits for the "they have more than one god but think it's still one" rants to start.)

Because they believe in the Trinity, which is God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Ghost. As the trinity teaches that Jesus is God the Son, and Mary is the mother of Jesus, then she is also the mother of God.

A very thorny subject.
Mother of God - that is blasphemy, probably derives from some pagan religion where God could have a mother.
Not only Catholics, but many Christians generally manage to do a trapeze act with Mary and Jesus & God & throw in the Holy Ghost (whatever that is) for good measure.
