Why is it that the government thinks every person will potentially blow up the plane?

Shoes, pen knives and now this: toothpaste and other toileteries in a bag.. Do you think the government will resort to patting you up and also possibly strip-searching?

Well, I understand that the government, to avoid the appearance of "racial profiling" would make a broad edict for anything they think will save lives. However, I fail to see how a zip lock bag will save lives. Are these bullet proof baggies?
Do they have magical powers that will keep explosives so contained that not even a spec of Crest would leak out? Geez...
Although...I guess the Tooth Fairy is pitching a fit, now that travelers can't brush between meals....
lol...

Actually, it is NOT about "safety and security", but about harassment and control--it's an ego power trip for those who implemented and carried this out. The travel restrictions are absolutely RIDICULOUS, but a person cannot protest or question them at the airport, because that person will be subject to being treated as a potential criminal or "terrorist." I guarantee you that the high-level govt. officials, like the idiots in the White House, are NOT subjected to such de-humanizing measures. It's possible they have already started strip-searching people and it hasn't been reported. I flatly REFUSE to travel by commercial airplane because I refuse to subject myself to this unnecessary indignity. The two times I have traveled by air since 9/11, I was randomly picked out and patted down and had my carry on luggage searched as well. After that, I said, no more. I will travel by car or bus until this insanity ends. Besides, I don't have the money to travel by air, so that's a blessing, really.

This happens in Europe too, you have to put all the things that your are allowed to take with you on the airplane in a plastic bag (medicines too). These are all safety measures after the terrorist attacks against U.S.A. Nowadays you have a feeling that all who travel on airplanes are terrorists, but I´m sure that happens for a good reason, our plastic bag can easily be checked and we all can travel safely.(our travel baggage is thoroughly checked too) Have a safe and nice flight next time you fly.

The liquid bomb scare of last August (2006) would have been physically impossible to create on an aircraft without the alleged bombers also smuggling an extensive set of chemistry apparatus onto the plane as well. Additionally, many of the alleged bombers never even had passports and will belonging to one of the uncle's of the alleged bombers was taken as evidence and labeled as a suicide note. What is was in reality was a will made out as the uncle of the alleged bomber was a Muslim fundamentalist fighter, fighting on NATO's side in Kosovo. He made out the will before he went to fight for NATO against the Serbs.

This was all massively over hyped by the powers that be and the media into some sort of narrowly averted mass murder outrage. It was nothing of the sort.

As for do I feel safe flying? Well if the powers that be need to 'arrange' or 'allow' another terrorist outrage to occur to help justify further cuts in our liberties or wars abroad, then it matters not what security is put in place at airports. As the Operation Northwoods documents show, the powers that be could easily arrange for a temporary flaw in security to occur to allow the attack to take place.

So NO; I do not feel safe flying. So long as the crazies (neo-cons) are looking for any excuse to go to war in Iran, Air travel will not be safe. They would be willing, to see a dozen aircraft fall out of the sky, after all, we are just useless eaters to them.

If the neo-cons can then blame this in Islamic crazies, all the better for them, Likewise, the fundementalist Islamic crazies need the crazy neo-cons too.

Without each other, there would be no need for Jihad, or the war on terror.

They need each other and so will never ever defeat each other in war. Al Queda is Dick Cheney's best friend. Oh and Al Queda and the Neo-cons BOTH are mortal enemies of Iran, so watch for the lies about Iran helping Al Queda.

No I do not feel safer. The government thinks that way cause it has to think on the safe side. Putting all liquids in a bag will not stop terrorists. I think they are smarter than that. It just makes it an inconvenience for all us other travelers. And what is up with the shoe thing? I do not think that they can do anything to make travel safer. Just little precautions to make our traveling experience a pain in the butt.

All that stuff could be legal and I wouldn't feel safe on airplane. I would worry about engines failing, drunk pilots, and people who were just not mentally balanced. I was in the army where I was issued a parachute and a reserve before I got on the plane (82nd Airborne). I felt safer then than I do now.

I agree with the other responders.

It's for harassment and control of the population. We are turning into a police state.

TSA just announced that smokers can take on one butane lighter on board planes again! You can make a mini-flame-thrower with that!!!

So yes, the regulations do not do anything for safe air travel, it's just there to harass people for control and lull the uneducated brainwashed sheep ("well, at least they are doing something about it")...

Well, all you sheep out there, get a grip on life.

They don't think that EVERYONE will want to blow up the plane, but these measures prevent the ONE or TWO who want to from being able to take such things on board under the guise of something as innocuous as toothpaste..

To your first question, No, I don't feel safer just because everyone's toothpaste is in a clear plastic bag.

I feel safer from toothpaste leaks getting all over my luggage! My wife is always telling me I have to do this everytime we take a trip now she call yell at me..."HOMELAND SECURITY SAYS YOU HAVE TOO!"

As far as feeling safer from planes blowing up....no I do not.

Not profiling people on these issues is ridiculous.
