I have a fourteen year old cat and last year we got a kitten. We have had the kitten for a year now. Over the last six months I have periodically had a problem with the new cat poopand peeing in other places. Lately I have began to suspect the older cat. Now a third cat has shown up on my door. I am getting sick of the **** litterly and I am thinking of getting rid of all but the fourteen year old any suggestions?

My first question is, how many litter boxes do you have? Most people recommend having a litter box for each cat plus one extra. In theory, you should have four litter boxes. Cats sometimes don't like sharing, and they can become territorial.

Second, how clean do you keep the boxes? Cats are very picky and often won't use a dirty box. With three cats, you should be scooping at least once a day, twice would be better. I don't think it could be the type of litter you're using, because you say it happens periodically.

What sex is the new cat? Are they fixed? This could have something to do with it. To be safe, I would schedule vet appointments for the three of them to rule out any health problems that could be the cause.

You could separate the three cats into different rooms, each with their own litter box and food and water dishes. You could do this for a 24-hour period, and maybe you'll find out who the culprit is.

I think the most important thing is to schedule the vet appointments and rule out any major medical problems that could cause the litter box troubles.

'Getting rid' of a cat who's trusted you for his whole life?

Sure you get sick of it, but are you treating the problem? Is there enough litter boxes for the environment, and does the older cat have trouble getting into and out of the box? Is he being ambushed when he tries to use it? Find the problem and you can fix it instead of treating pets like toy dolls to be tossed away. These animals bond to people and take it hard when their lives are turned upside down.
