I own the older bulkier PlayStation 2, and when i put a game or DVD in the system will read it, but when it's playing it will freeze for a few seconds and skip and seem kind of laggy. The game discs are fine, i keep them clean, so what it the problem? if it needs cleaning, what can i buy to clean it?, it might be old, but i dont wont to trade it in just yet, but that may be my only choice! :(

You might have a spot of dust on the lens. This is going to require a moderate amount of mechanical skill, so don't attempt this if you're not confident you can succeed.

First, you'll need to slice your warranty sticker on the back of your PS2. (It's positioned in such a way that you cannot open your console without removing it.) Remove the little rubber and plastic nubbies from the bottom of the PS2 to expose the screws. Remove all the screws and carefully lift the top of the plastic case off the console.

Next, take a small screwdriver like the kind you'd find in a sunglasses repair kit and remove the plastic cover on the CD drive, exposing the laser lens. Take a small can of compressed air and gently blow the lens off, trying to blow underneath the lens too. Take care NOT to actually touch the lens, or you may scratch it! If you're feeling particularly lucky, take a small soft piece of cheesecloth and carefully wipe the lens, using only the weight of the cheesecloth itself as pressure.

If the game still won't play after reassembling your PS2, open it back up again. See that little grey dial inside the CD drive? Mark its current position by putting a black dot with a marker, then try adjusting it a couple clicks in either direction. Keep making adjustments and testing your game until you find a setting that works. The mark is so that you know where you started from, enabling you to return to that starting point if necessary.

Good luck!

PI Joe is correct. This is the standard way to fix the older PS2s where the tiny cog would wear since it was plastic instead of metal. Interesting how a piece that costs less than 25 cents seems to be the backbone of all these hardware failures. Almost like they want them to break so you'll buy new ones.

Get a CD/DVD lense cleaner, that should help it out a lot. If it is still being laggy, open the PS2 up with a screwdriver and vacuum out all the dust, and use a compressed air can that you use on the computer keyboard. This should clear it up.

These units can have a problem with the laser reader lens system. We got ours repaired for $50 at a game store.

The worm gear may be stripped. This is the gear that causes the eye to move in and out.
