yes, i saw something on the tv about back pains and they said whatever weight you carry in front havfe 6x (more or less) pressure on your back. so i believe beer bellies does have effects on your back

Sure if you're carrying around so much it throws your back off. Makes your lower back thrust forward and out of alignment. My Dad has a problem with back aches for years, he also had a little pot belly. Went on a diet, lost the belly and has no more back problems.
