going to put outlet covers back on. Well the problem is that when I put one on, the outlet thrmselves sit too far back into the wall. What can I do about that??

If the screws holding the plug in are long enough you can loosen them to make the plug even with the drywall. Be careful not to touch the sides of the plug or you will get shocked.

When installing electrical boxes you should offset them the thickness of the drywall so they are flush with the finished wall.

The outlet box is too far in, and you get spacers which will bring the outlet out to the proper level, or move the outlet box to conform to the proper depth.

Put a shim where the boxes are screwed in. Make the shim the width that the box is recessed.

Sounds like hubby used sheet rock that was to thick. I don't know the solution but blame it on him! LOL
