I just asked a question about the draft. It angers me when people say my stepson volunteered to join yes he did but he joined because he wanted to further his education not to fight in a stupid war and maybe get killed. Would other countries come to our aid? I think not. Also someone said I should not be happy my 18 year old son is a daddy you know nothing about my life! Could you say that if you could look into my grandbabies eyes? I want to hear from people who think we should bring the troops home not military people who encourage it. Is there anyone out there? What is that war solving oh and why haven't we caught Osma Bin Laden already? GRRR!!!!!!

YES it is absolutely unnecessary!!! My fiances step brother is in the worst part over in IRAQ right now and its rediculous! I cant stand this whole war and its retarded on my own opinion. Its just one way for bush to try and reduce our population. Now hopefully when someone else is nominated president they will pull our troops out. Its some rediculous thing for bush to keep raising living rates and let our soldiers die. Its very upsetting.

Last time I checked, it was the "military people" who are fighting this war. If your stepson only joined the military to further his education and not fight this war, then he is a total idiot. I hope for his sake that he joined knowning damn well he will most likely be deployed and will fight for his country like soldiers are supposed to do. The only ones who have a true right to gripe about Iraq are the soldiers who actually have to fight it. What is the war solving? 1. Getting a sadistic tyrant out of power and into a noose. 2. Keeping the terrorists at bay 3. Revealing the true bravery of this country by seeing those who still join the military in this time of war. To answer your question about Osama: you try looking for one prick with a beard in a hostile region in the roughest terrain known to man.

No matter if you agree with the war or not your step son volunteered even if he didn't want to go to war. You say he is 18 - so that tells me we were already at war when he joined. If he didn't want to go to war then he should have found a different way to pay for school. I know paying for school is difficult - been there done that and I am still paying for it.

Unfortunately, Bin Laden isn't the only terrorist out there is he.

Ma'am, everybody wants the troops home... especially the troops and their command structure. But, several points, if I may.

(1) There is no draft at present. Since it's an election year, and since Congress are wimps, there is likely to be none this year. But you complain that your son has been in Iraq. Had there been a draft, it is possible he would have been there for a shorter period of time because there would have been troops to relieve him. But, without a draft, we have to rely on American patriotism....

(2) At present your 18-year old son is safe... he and his kid can read about history, while those who are serving are writing it.

(3) "Bring them home NOW" is the rhetoric of the protesters in the 60s. It obviated a military victory in Vietnam.

(4) The military is not in business to train computer programmers for Microsoft, or avionics engineers for Boeing, or EMTs for the local fire department. While some who are astute and who apply themselves can get some of that training, the military is in business to fight.

(4) If your son were in the military, and where killed, I would look into your grandbaby's eyes and tell him or her the same thing I told other loved ones about their sons or husbands or fathers. "Your father is a hero. He is a brave man. He gave his life for his country. He fought to give others the same privileges you have... the same privileges you have because other brave and heroic men fought and died to get and keep them for you. You should be proud of your dad. You will miss his presence. But heroes, like your dad, never leave you."

(5) Military men DO NOT ENCOURAGE WAR. You sound as if you think that COs wake up in the morning, wring their hands with glee and say, "What a great day. Wonder how many of my men I can get killed today." Men in the military dislike war more than you can imagine. Your stepson had a "scary" time in Iraq. It's scary to all of them. What makes mere men heroes is that they don't hide shivering in a foxhole... or a comfy room back home... rather they do their jobs in spite of their fear.

(6) I would love to see the guys and gals come home. But, just like the protesters of the 60s and 70s, people don't seem to realize that an immediate withdrawal would be catastrophic. The Iraqi government isn't yet prepared to take the reins. The Iraqi military and police are making progress, but, at this point, they are unable to fight the war on their own. And, if we pull out now... or by any published timetable, the insurgents would claim a victory. And that victory would be directly the result of those protests. And it would flush the lives of over 3000 men and women down the toilet. By not letting the military get the job done, their deaths would be for nothing.

(7) Wars don't solve anything. They facilitate solutions. Though you don't hear much about it, we are making headway. We're training the Iraqi military and police. This is not easy because for as long as many of those people have been alive, the thought of fighting for your rights... or even having rights... would never have entered their minds. We've let them establish their own government... not one forced upon them. For the first time in their cultural memory, they actually had a free election. We are slowly rebuilding the infrastructure. It's slow because civic improvements are easy targets for insurgents. Sure we would like the Iraqi government to be friendly towards us. But, if it isn't, it isn't. It's up to them. Sure we would like a source of low-cost oil. But any thinking individual understands that Iraq cannot set the price of oil.

(8) You really still think bin Laden's still alive?

(9) War is a necessary evil. It looks as if there will always be people out there who don't like the US... at least until they need our help. Many of these people we're fighting don't seem to care much about their lives. It was said of Japan's kamikaze pilots, that they were fighting to die and our guys were fighting to stay alive. This is more true of a terrorist. But, I would point out that, while we hear of planned attacks here in the US, there hasn't been one since 9/11. Perhaps they're so busy fighting over there that they don't have the resources to mount much of anything here. That's conjecture. At any rate, would you prefer we bring our troops at home so they can fight the terrorists in our streets?

although you may be upset that your son joined the army, you need to remember that he volunteered!! he knew what was happening in the world when he joined up. plus, listen to what the returning soldiers say... they had fun and a lot want to go back. this war is a way to defend our freedom as well as the freedom of others. while we may not have caught who we are looking for, we are still doing plenty of good.
also remember that your son isn't the only solider who is fighting with a child at home. so get over yourself and think that what your son is doing is honorable and that he CHOSE TO DO IT!!! and fighting is furthering his education... he's getting to make friends from all over the world and see parts of the world that most civilians don't get to see. his son will grow up proud of his old man.

"It angers me when people say my stepson volunteered to join yes he did but he joined because he wanted to further his education not to fight in a stupid war and maybe get killed."

But your son did volunteer to join, and he knows the risks he may face. He could always get a job or take out loans for education. Many in the military also joined for the same reason, none of them want to fight in a war. The military is not some government social program, they offer incentives to join because they realize that they may ask someone to lose their life for their mission.

"I want to hear from people who think we should bring the troops home not military people who encourage it."

Suit yourself, but you are limiting your reality and if you only want to hear one side of it, then I think you are not living in reality.

So you just admitted that your step-son was looking for a hand out? I feel a little worried about this. My brother in law joined because he wanted to serve his country and get a little payback. If your step-son doesn't like it he can take it up with his commanding officer. Maybe he could do some time in prison here instead of serving his country. You should be ashamed of him if that's really his cause. Other countries have come to our aid, how else do you think we have this great nation? Have we found all murderers here in our own country? Do you think we can find one rat in Afghanistan? Do you even know what the terrain is like there?

yes, 90% of the american people. it was based on lies. when your son joined, sorry to say, he aided the problem. google tillman, look what happened to him. no one should ever join for school. this is a war based on lies and deception, iraq posed no threat and had nothing to do with 9/11, neither did afghanistan, 9/11 was a inside job. i hope your son makes it home safely, God bless you , him ans his child

well, that is the cost of an education. I mean, you and he must realize what armies are for!

Over 1/2 of the active duty military oppose Iraq, and 80% of Americans according to the latest poll in the Army Times!.

Bush's partners in crime are all bailing out of a sinking ship and Bush is running home to daddy to get advice!

As Iraq was no threat to us, did not attack us, was not involved in 9/11 and had nothing to do with terrorist, it is pretty damn obvious Bush and company are idiots!

He is one poor excuse for a human being!

If your kid joined not thinking he could end up in a shooting war, maybe he isn't smart enough for college after all.
