Thunder is the sound of the shockwave caused when lightning instantly heats the air around it to up to 30 000 °C (54 000 °F). That super-heated air expands rapidly, then contracts as it cools. The rapid expansion/contraction generates sound waves, making the sound that is called "thunder."

I dont fear it, although sometimes when it "claps" very close by it makes me jump out of suprise.

The sound made from an electrical discharge high in the atmosphere.

The lightning if it hits the ground is rather dangerous but the thunder clap is heard after the lightning has hit the ground (because sound travels slower than light) so a thunder clap isn't dangerous.

But if you're hearing one then there will probably other lightning strikes so it probably is wise to be careful and stay away from anything tall that might get hit. If you're indoors and don't have an urgent need to go outside stay inside and if your house has overhead wires providing electricity unplug things otherwise you may have to buy new appliances.

If you get hit by lightning you might die and even if you survive you'll be injured, possibly for life.

A thunder clap is the actual sound that lightening makes when it hits. So yes if it is close then you should be scared of it.

A "thunder clap" is the sound that results when lightning strikes.

Why would you need to fear a sound though?

Yes I fear it. I met a gorgeous girl and when I found
out she had the thunder clap I could not look her in
the eyes anymore. In case she wanted to give it
to me.
