I sold my vehicle via eBay to a Mexican citizen who does not have US driver lic# and address is of his relative living in US.
I live in NJ, how do I ensure myself that this title does get transferred.
I do not want to be held liable, if the automobile is used for criminal/drug or any type unthinkable criminal charges and if the title is never re-registered by the buyer and remains under my name with my address.
Has anyone sold cars to non-US citizen. Why do you ensure that you do not remain held liable for any crime or accident that may occur if the person decides not to re-register car in US or Mexico.
I may be paranoid about selling to a Mexican citizen but anyone who has done similar transaction, your help is appreciated.

Photocopy the ID the buyer gives you, and keep a copy of the assigned title. Remove and turn in your tags! Notify DMV of the sale if required!

I sell a lot of cars to out of state buyers, and a few to out of country ones. As long as I have a record of the buyer, I have no further liability for the vehicle!

Make sure that you get cash only for the car!

Well, frankly I wouldn't sell to someone without a good address and license. But...if you get all his information, and then notify the DMV that you have sold the car, when and to whom, you are *probably* off the hook.

If you sold or bought a vehicle
The Seller must:
Remove the plates and surrender them to any MVC Agency or Regional Service Center, unless the plates are being transferred to another vehicle (plates can be transferred to another vehicle but not to another owner)
Sign the reverse side of the title and give it to the buyer, with:
Buyer's name and address
Date of sale
Mileage odometer reading (see below)
Sale price
To avoid a $25 penalty, all titles must be transferred within 10 working days from the date of sale

The Buyer must:
Sign the back of the title and insert his or her driver license or corpcode number
Visit an MVC Agency to transfer title, complete registration and receive your plates:
Bring the signed title, proof of insurance and sales tax payment (see Vehicles exempt from sales tax)
Pay $20 (or $40 fee for a financed vehicle)

Seems like there are some things there the buyer wouldn't be able to do as he should. As I said, I would not sell, but you can contact the DMV and ask about your liability.

See http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/Location/TypesFacilitiesHours.htm for locations of the nearest to you.

Go to the DMV with the new owner

Get it all out of your name - and into his.

Cancel the registration
insurance
plates
and the title

Remove it all from the car.
