I met my life partner on the net eight years ago.
It is just another way of meeting people. As long as you - and they - are careful it is as good a way to meet as any and better than some (say a night club).

chatting is more intimate. you get to talk to the other person without showing emotion or body language. you can control what you have to say. it is easy to fall in love if you are stupid enough to believe everything that the other one is telling you or making you believe.
