I always see the people who want everything double bagged and I always wonder how many of them have actually had something go right through the bag. Because sometimes I think people take it to far and if the stuff is bagged right then it should be fine. I bag my own stuff and I dont double bag and I have never had it happen to me. My grandmother insists on having hers doubled or with a paper bag and I asked her this question and she said no she has never had it happen. But she doesnt want to risk it. Have any of you ever had it happen to YOU?

Yeah. They put 3 two liter sodas in a DOUBLED bag and the damn handles ripped off when I lifted it out the cart and one of the sodas exploded all over the trunk of my car. I was pissed.

Yes - I have had a plastic grocery bag rip while I was carrying groceries to the car. Below the handle ripped and jars and cans spilled out braking a jar of tomato sauce. I only get the bags that are very heavy and that have breakable items double bagged - I don't want to use more plastic than I have too.

I don't double bag because I feel like I'm wasting bags, but of course everytime one or two bags rip and I didn't bag them! The last item that crashed through the bag was a huge jar of hot peppers all over my front side walk.

I have a number of times. However, I will say that the only times I have had it happen is when I have 2 two liter bottles of soda in the bad, and one of the bottles usually pokes a hole through the side. Other than when that happens, usualy a single bag holds up just fine, even when its loaded with something heavy, like a whole lot of jars of baby food for my son.

maybe try this: continue using your canvas bags, and when you run low on bags for your garbage, take one less canvas bag to the store so you can get a store bag instead. But try using paper bags as they will breakdown much faster than plastic in the landfills. OR.... ask your friends if they will donate their plastic bags to you. that way less get thrown out uselessly and you can still use canvas and not have to spend money on store bought garbage bags! As long as you are using LESS plastic or are utilizing it else where, it is still recycling. If you THREW OUT your plastic grocery bags and then BOUGHT actual trash bags, that would be where the waste was happening.

it's happened to me more times then I can count. I only ask for a bag to be double bagged if it's already ripping or looks like it's about to.

Yes, many times. Some people double bag if they get frozen stuff to help keep it frozen. Boxed food has sharp corners that tend to rip the bag. I am told also it depends on how far you have to carry it..

Yep, it's happened to me too. Right in the middle of my apartment building's parking garage. Maybe I should take a leaf out of your grandmother's book and start double bagging!

Yes it's happened a few times so if I have doubts I'll ask the clerk to double bag. Sometimes they do it automatically.
