I'm paying off a debt....and I was told to write a letter before sending money, to see if it can be taken off my credit. It is a utility bill. Do I send the letter to the collection agency or the utility co.?

You b´need to send it to the utility company, The collection agency is just doing what the utility company is telling them to do. Wld be a good idea to send the agency a copy of the letter.

You need to contact the collection company, as they are now in charge of the debt.... depending on the agency, they may of purchased it.

Asking for it to be removed from your credit report is a waste of time if it is a valid debt. The law says that negative information can remain on your credit report for 7 years... and it will.... and it should. Even if you get it taken off, it will pop back up on there eventually. Just mail the check and forget about it.
