Surely there should be a £1m+ stamp duty of say, I don't know, 5%?

As has been pointed out Gordon Brown will not change the stamp duty thresholds as he is no longer Chancellor.

The next revision to the levels will probably be made in the Budget speech next March.

I'm not sure why you think the threshold for the 1% rate should be as high as £200,000. This rate is designed to help first time buyers and as such should be restricted to smaller properties. The average house price is now around the £200,000 mark so by definition about half the houses in the country will be worth less than this.

The 3% rate covers property up to £500,000 so this could be considered the "standard rate". Larger properties are already charged at 5%.

i think he is more likely to lower it. He is middle belt Scottish old labour and what he really believes is that only bloated capitalist Tory pigs want to own their own house and the sooner we all live in council houses the better.
