I deal with this time and time again. I will stop someone for a violation and they are rude right off the bat. Why, would anyone in their right mind, believe they are going to get a break when they were just rude and vulgar to the officer? I'm sorry but when you are rude, you WILL get a citation/ticket for the violation. Not to mention, many people think that they deserve the break and only them. C'mon, being nice may get you a break. Officers have enough to worry about and don't need your attitude in the mix.

Yes, as a police officer, it is my discretian as to who I decide to write a ticket to and who I don't. We don't have supervisors breathing down our neck telling us we can or can't write a ticket for the violation. All of that is up to the officer.

Taking it a step further, often times those who are rude continue despite whether or not you give them the ticket. Then they have the audacity to call supervision to complain about how the officer was rude.

Most people are good! There are those select few, however, who think the world revolves around them and they attempt to stomp their foot the hardest to get their way! These are the types who need to grow up and realize they're NOT above the law and when caught doing something wrong....look in the mirror because who you see is who is at fault!

Giving the violators a break never solves traffic violations from occurring. Police should ticket every violator that they stop unless the circumstances suggest a warning. Quietly explain the circumstances, if any. Being rude to a police officer means that you are not going to accept a warning anyway, so the best thing to do is to accept the ticket quietly. After all, the probability is that for being caught that one time, you have got away with speeding (or whatever the violation is) many times. As for the rather silly report that the police should be looking for "real criminals" it suggests that police should ignore traffic laws completely and spend all of their manpower on crime. Whereas actually more people get killed in traffic than are killed in criminal activities. The police have officers specializing in criminal matters as you know very well.

There are 4 reasons.

1. Most people expect the officer walking up to their window to be the sterotypical *** of a cop who thinks he is above the law. (The cop that writes you a parking ticket because you are stoped in a no parking lane, but your car is on and you in drive with your foot on the breaks, because your picking you wife up at the front of the grocery store.) Yes there are a few, but most cops are not like this.

2. People think they know the law better than you do, and these same people have no regard for the law and just don't care.

3. Most people think cops can be doing more with their time than catching speeders and people driving with out a seat belt. I know in Virginia, for the most part, state troopers worry about traffic while local cops worry about everything else. (My favorite is operation party crashers. They go on myspace and facebook and look for underage drinking at parties. I think it the greatest thing when these kids get busted.)

4. Finally because they have gotten warnings before, or their buddy gets off with a warning. I know someone personally who gets pulled over all the time for speeding and just gets warnings.

Unlike some of us whom see a cop and wonder what did I do.They just have no respect for the law.Recently I got stopped by an officer when I was taking a fellow employee home.Apparently I sweved in the road.He thought I might have been drinking. But nicely explained I was tired for it was after 11:00 pm.There was no problem.I was just a bit more careful going home.It is kind of funny.Because I don't drink alcohol it made my day.Thank you for being out there to protect the citizens.

Because they're idiots who think the world owes them EVERYTHING... I've never been pulled over for anything yet and don't expect any breaks if I've done something wrong, but I can't find a single reason why I'd disrespect a police officer, considering a few nice people might be the only good things they see that day...

I agree...but it isn't up to the police to determine who they make accountable for the law. At least, it shouldn't be. Maybe these people have dealt with cops who are rude to them...you never expected to make friends when you pull people over, right? I am a chef, and I deal with my fair share of rude people...it comes with the territory. but I can tell you that as a professional, I do not take my frustrations out on them by spitting in their food...Chefs have enough to worry about and don't need their attitudes in the mix either. That doesn't mean I can use my authority to make their lives miserable.

You know that's why I stopped giving breaks on traffic stops. Always an excuse and most of the time they either lie to you or they think that being late IS an excuse to speed or run a stop sign/ light. All they have to do is leave on time and if that's not working for them they should leave five minutes earlier. Remember peeps the laws are to protect everyone in general and are usually for safety purposes.

Human nature, there's always someone out there that has an inflated self-image and thinks everyone else is subservient to them.

They just never seem to learn that being polite can get positive results in bad situations.

It's like the question to "how many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie roll pop?"

The world may never know.

Maybe it's because they can't believe they are being ticketed for such a petty offense. They are simply normal people maybe just trying to get to work. Maybe they are late. Maybe they are doing something important. This is something the police don't recognize and slap us normal people with outrageous fines for going a tad bit over the speed limit. I'm sorry to be one of those people that say "why aren't you out arresting the real criminals" but I am.

Why don't you give people a break? I've never been rude or vulgar when getting stopped but being nice never got me off the hook either.
