Like your car, the hotter the PS3 gets, the more the fan tries to cool itself. There are "cooling units" on the market that help keep the machine cooler so this is less likely to happen.

It'll go on and off as and when it needs to.
Just make sure you're not blocking the vents on the side and back and it can get a decent supply of air, especially if it seems to stay on for a while.

Those things were recalled over here where Im at because the fans have been known to start fires..

the fan is thermostatically controlled, if the temperature rises, the fan runs faster to compensate.
