one of my cats came home with his arm about to fall off and it was horrifying to see the bone and the paw about to fall off. he got his leg caught in a leg trap that some person put out for other animals. since it was a miracle he came back of course we didnt want to put him down so he got it amputated off. its been 2 1/2 weeks and he got his stitches out but he's not himself. he wont socialize with us or the other cats. hes nothing like himself. his pupils are big and hes nervous i dont know what to do ((((((( for all animals lovers like me we dont let our cats outside he got out from a open door as someone was walking out))))))

He's still in pain. The pupils and the actions are all indicating that. Remember he's had major surgery.

Give your vet a call and ask if there's a liquid pain medication you can give him for a week or two yet because he's showing signs of agony.

Keep him in a quiet area with soft bedding and bring him food and water so he doesn't have to get up much. But keep the litter box 4 feet away from the food, and make sure it's very clean and that the box has very low sides since he's going to have painful trouble getting around. An old cookie sheet with some litter in the center should be ok for this. Spend a little time every few hours sitting quietly with him and talking softly so he has something to focus on besides his hurt. Don't touch anywhere near the wound, but petting the top of his head or his ears and side of his jaw should be ok. Light touches so he's not tensing muscles.

He can heal, but he's going to take time. This is a major injury.

Hi
Cats with 3 legs can learn to get around fine over a little time.
I would just say to keep loving him and give him extra attention. If he liked catnip before he will still like it and it may relax him. Special treats like chicken and tuna for him would also be nice.
I don't know how many other cats you have but the others may be making it a little more difficult because of the hierarchy and his loss of standing. He'll eventually come around. Best of luck

He's had a traumatic experience. I would be nervous and upset, too. His body and his nervous system have undergone a shock.
I had kittens who got their umbilical cords wrapped around their feet when they were born under my kitchen sink when I was at work. We had to have them cut apart - the cords had wrapped so tightly around the feet, for so long, that the circulation to the feet on 2 of the cats had been cut off too long. We took them to the vet when they were a day old. We had to bathe the feet in warm salt water 4 times a day. Eventually, one of the kittens simply walked out of his 2 back feet. Very strange to see. He learned to walk and play with his brothers and sisters and had no problem getting around. The other one only lost 1 foot and she was fine, also. I would give him time, let him be quiet, and be calm with him. He will recover from his horrible experience.
Good luck to you and give him a pet from me!

Yeah, as above, he will take some time, but what i would recommend in the meantime is feliway. You can buy it as a spray or as a plug-in, its just like a scent diffuser except you can't really smell it. I have used it with my cats for every trauma they have ever goen through and it really calms them down (it is made of pheromones that give them a feeling of safety). Obviously your kitty is significantly more traumatised than mine have ever been, but I think this would definately be worth a try until he gets back to his usual self. Good Luck!

A roomate and I went thru a similar experience about 10 years ago.....but our cat got hit by a car and managed to drag himself home, he had one of his back legs amputated......ray wasn't himself for about a month and then he started to come around....its a terrifying experience for an animal.....your cat will be himself again once he gets used to having only 3 legs...

You have done the right thing already. Your cat is obviously shocked and sad (wouldn't you be if you were in his place?).But he will survive and he will get over it, and he will have a good life. It's better to be amputated than dead. So don't have any second thoughts. just give him a lot of love and time.

Give him plenty of love and show him a lot of patience. Let him know that you are there for him and love him alot. This was a very traumatic experience for him. Don't push yourself on him because this could become a further setback for him. He is going to have to regain his trust in you after this ordeal even though you weren't the one that caused this, so like I said give him time, love and patience.

You would be nervous too if something you stepped in suddenly ripped off part of your arm. Give him time. Give him affection. He is going through depression, and will need time to adjust to his new body. Just make sure he is eating at least once a day and getting water a couple times a day. He will come around.

Poor baby- he's freaked.
How old is he? I don't know if an older cat would take an
amputation well.
Give him lots of time.
Did he get light pain medication?
He should have. He's going to need lots of time to adjust- he
feels like "prey" (vulnerable and defenseless) right now and
is going to try to adjust himself, before he starts dealing with those around him.
So sorry about this.

P.S. Rob S you are as bad or worse as people who dump cats- I have spayed & neutered 30 cats and released them back where they were.
You are thoughtless.

Ask the vet. Your cat is going through a BIG change. He might take a while to adjust. Just give him pleanty of attention and be patient while he recovers.
