i think medium building more safe secure and healthy

If you live in a city, where the cost per M2 is so high, that it is forcing poorer people out into suburbs, then you need to build social housing, and by building upwards, you reduce the land cost. You can also fit a lot more people into that space, so it is more economical to build public transport links to it, and shops to service the population.

the rest is down to penile envy amongst architects, who want to build the biggest, and the fools who pay for them.

I believe its much the same reason some men feel the need to buy very large ford trucks and buy big guns. Plus you don't have to pay for vertical space and it more efficient.
