When you call a company to see if they are hiring, ask if they are hiring new engineers out-of-college. Those companies represent your best options for finding work.

When you interview for a job position, be prepared to explain the 4 years between graduation and now.

As for refreshing your academics, there is one book that covers many subjects and is a very good reference: "The Art of Electronics", by Horowitz and Hill. Even so, the company you end up working for as a 'starting' engineer will provide much of your training on-the-job, anyway.

I woulds say actually electric engineering, gazing the concentration. by way of some distance the main important utility of nanotechnology is for semiconductors. I did a level in electric engineering specializing in VLSI (if truth be told microchip layout and fabrication). electric engineers in this sub-discipline use common and quantum physics to layout small scale structures like circuits, MEMS (micro-electo-mechanical structures), and micro-fluidics units. electric engineers extra concentrated in issues like E+M fields and skill distribution don't have something to do with nano. Mechanical engineers might no longer be taught quantum physics, that is mandatory for nano-scale units. no remember what, nano-scale fabrication is bypass-disciplinary requiring electric, chemical, cloth, and mechanical engineers besides as scientists and technicians.

Start small. You might have to find a place that is hiring a technician. Ameritech, or what not. If you did get hired as a technician, a lot of the time you would make just as much as an engineer.
