Cavalier King Charles Spaniels make very easy pets, they are generally good tempered and don't need as much exercise as terriers. If I was to get a small dog I'd have a Jack Russell because I love them but they are hard work, need lots of attention, training and exercise and even then will probably bark too much to be kept in an apartment. Miniature or Toy poodles are good as they don't moult. You may have difficulty getting a rescue dog as the organisations prefer you to have a garden and be able to not leave the dog for more then 4 hours at a time. I'm going to have a look at Silky Terriers too, they sound cute!

Maltese are great little dogs I know this because I've got one. You don't have to brush them you can shave them and they will look just as cute. Sometimes you can get ugly ones but I'm sure you get a good pick. They are small, in proportion, don't have boggle eyes and fur may bey straight or on the curly side. They may be a bit pricy though. Or as others sugested get a dog from the pound they desex them, give them shots and you only have to pay around the 100 dollar mark and you'll be suprised how many friendly, small and cute dogs they have there. Trust me I got a mut he's the best.
Good Luck!!!

I have a pug which are considered apartment friendly due to mainly it's size. However, one must be warned, they shed like a mofo. I love mine dearly and would never trade her in for world. I always have to carry a lint roller and vacuum. Plus, pugs stay in the puppy stage longer then most dogs. what that means, they will be hyper longer and it will take them longer to train. Some people say pugs are dumb because they don't listen. It's not dumbness, it's them being stubborn. And they can be extremely stubborn!

if you are willing to accept all that then, then you are (almost) ready for a pug. All that aside, they are wonderful dogs and true companions. Mine is such a love bug, I can't sit on the couch alone without her curling up next to me. =)

And always check shelters first! There are many wonderful pets there that get sent because their previous owners don't know what they were getting into. Plus, you would be saving a life.

Please consider a rescue dog. Check the local rescue and shelters. Also, check any breed rescue on line and ask a vet. Cockers, Westies,Yorkies, and mixies of these are great first dogs still small and cute. (Try to get female) Try traveling with a new pet. Most male dogs like to mark thier area by peeing. Think about care like shedding, grooming, noise(barking), and vet cost. Most cities require shots and you must get a licence. Be sure you are in complience with rules of the owner of the apartment. Will your lease need to be changed? Be careful as some of the dogs mentioned are very hyper active and can bark at anything. First dog should NOT be a puppy! Your dog will love you unconditionally!

Shetland Sheep dogs are great; they are small and well behaved. They train well and don’t mind a small area to live in. (they look like a little collie but they are not related) if u cant decided, go to the pound, if u cant find a suitable dog there don’t get one just because you think it looks good, just wait because the right one will be there soon. U don’t want to rush into anything. The pound or any vet near you can also talk to you about the best bread for you.

You don't have to necessarily go for a pedigree, but i would recommend a Manchester terrier. They look a bit mean but are actually very affectionate dogs and are rather unusual and unlike other terriers aren't too vocal.

Spaniels are very energetic so possibly not suitable for an apartment.

I'm not sure whether you are UK or US based so my best suggestion would be go to a local dog shelter, they have so many dogs (and puppies) to choose from and you would really be doing a great deal of good in comparison to buying one from an ad in the back of a newspaper!

As a first time owner, you should not look at terriers - they are notoriously stubborn & hard to train. I have my first dog of my own in an apartment - she's a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

Go to the kennel clubs website and look through the toy and terrier breed standards and this will help you decide. It will tell you everything then if you find one you like you can go to google and find out more on the breed to see if it will suit you and your lifestyle. If more people did things like this then i dont think there would be as many abandoned dogs out there.
you could then go to your local rescue center and see if they had any in there you liked.

A Dachshund is a small breed they are friendly, smart, and hardly shed at all especially if you get a short hair. They come in three different coats long hair, short hair, and wire hair. They come in two sizes Standard and Miniature. They come in many different colors.

get a dog from a rescue centre. This may save the dogs life and give it a chance of happiness also cross breeds are so much easier to handle , not as many hangups
