It's an old timers thing.
times have changed.
Simpley state..............OH silly it's her turn to treat.
Or tell the wait staff, not knowing me, you are assuming too much, we are going dutch treat.
or better yet---
tell him silly boy............it's my birthday, i never pay on my b-day and slide the check over to the gal.
OR----when you enter or get seated, or make reservations, say this"in this day in age, It is greatly appreciated that you place the check in the middle of the table, it makes my lady friend feel in control and we don't have to fight over the bill."
it is no longer the 1900's nor the dark ages, just enlighten them

It's really between you and your girlfriend who pays. Don't pay so much attention to where they put the bill. I assume they put it in front of the guy because men historically asked women out and many still feel like they should 'be the man' and pay. Plus, men do usually make more than women. But that's beside the point.
If you don't want to pay all the time, discuss it with your girlfriend. I'll take the check in a restaurant if I can afford it, especially since my boyfriend does not mind paying for anything, I feel like I should pay once in a while at least. It doesn't matter where it's placed. It's not like the tables are so big I can't reach over and get it.

Judging by MOST of these answers, it's amazing how selective women's lib is. Haha What a hoot, and you see why women aren't taken seriously!
For the one who said the man is CHEAP, well some of these women sound pretty cheap (in BOTH senses) to me. Not all, a couple gave good answers, but the ones who think the men are supposed to always pay, are probably the ones who scream the loudest when some one suggests that their place is barefoot and in the kitchen.
A DECENT woman, wanting to pay the bill would simply put her hand out when the waiter came by; OR ask for the waiter to bring the bill "to me, please". I fortunately know some women with real class, who know when it's proper to pick up the tab and when it's not. Some of you ladies, would actually be LADIES if you learned from that type of woman.

The waiter became only going with math. If he has considered adult men pay ninety% of the time, then he's only taking part in the percentages by way of putting the bill in front of the guy. If it makes you experience better, you pays for my dinner the subsequent time we flow out!

In fine dining it is customary to hand the check to the male, don't take hard feelings with it. Explain to your girlfriend BEFORE you go out to dinner that you want to split the check, or switch off paying, example: she pays tonight, you pay next time, and so on and so forth. I work in more of a casual dining restaurant, and I always place the check in the check holder standing up in the middle of the table. I never assume who will be paying, I find that to be presumptuous.
gigue, do us servers a favor and stay home, you cheap grouch.

Gentlemen usually pay for the bill. If you want your girlfriend to pay then work it out with her prior and hand her the bill. Somehow I don't believe you have girlfriends for very long. You need to brush up on etiquette.

It's called custom, or etiquette if you want. I've no problem with that, if my girlfriend is the one who should be paying I just give her the bill.

As far as I'm concerned, waiters and waitresses are getting way out of hand! They expect too much. It's not MY job to buy gas for their brand new car!
Any question about tipping brings out the worst in me.

You are cheap.
So cheap.
It seems to me you are looking for a reason not to tip or pay..
Sickening. I would hate to be the girl eating out with you!
I usually put the bill in front of the guy or in the middle, its rude to put it in front of the lady.
