It's right there in the text -- because he didn't give from the "first fruits." Sacrifices were to be the best of the best. Cain made his offer begrudgingly.

In a more modern interpretation, there has always been animosity between farmers and ranchers. Cain and Abel could have been fighting over the land (or water) just as still happens today in many parts of the world.

If I give you a gift and you reject it how would I feel. probably angry. Now if I give you a gift and it like here this is what you want but i really did not want to give it to you, how would you feel?

Well Cain gave a sacrifice first of all he gave not with his heart but out of ritualistic thought instead. In other words he gave because he felt obligated to do so because he had to. It like going to church and not wanting to be there and wanting to be somewhere else.

To make things worse God confronted Cain and instead of taking correction he became angry and jealous of his brother that did right in the eyes of the Lord. The Lord even tried to stop cain from killing his brother by warning him of his anger. Cain did nto heed God's warning but decided to take revenge on his brother and killed him. Abel was innocent did not deserve death. He did what was right Cain did what was wrong.

Because Cain, having failed with vegetables... which apparently are only acceptable sacrifice in Japan.... didn't realise that the G-man is seriously speciesist and is fussy about which animals he will allow to be sacrificed to him, irrespective of whether they are (the best) or not. Apparently at that time the G-man was not accepting human sacrifice....

Sucked to be Cain. It isn't as though he received a warning memo or anything. He lost the brother he loved and the god he was originally seeking to appease.

"SOME" vs. "FIRST or BEST"

... Mostly attitude.

Genesis 4:3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD. 4 And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.

The law included grain and drink offerings, not all were animal.

Leviticus 23:12 On the day you wave the sheaf, you must sacrifice as a burnt offering to the LORD a lamb a year old without defect, 13 together with its grain offering of two-tenths of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with olive oil—a food offering presented to the LORD, a pleasing aroma—and its drink offering of a quarter of a hin of wine.

it is written in the bible that Cain's gift wasnt favored over Abel's gift. This was as Abel gave his firstlings of his flock and of their fats. By giving the Lord the firstling, he indicated/communicated to the Lord that the Lord comes first, that's why firstlings were given (Genesis 4:4). It was also said in James, that if you take steps closer to God, God will move closer to you. So in this case, since Abel had taken the first steps to give God his firstlings, God also responded likewise. Cain, on the other hand, did not do the same as Abel did (of giving firstlings). Hence the difference.

God rejected Cain's over Abel's is because of why hey were sacrificing...

Cain sacrificed because he had to(basically not wanting to give up his stuff) and Abel was doing it because he wanted to show God how much He loved Him. And because of that, God found Abel's gift pleasing.

It was supposed to be an animal sacrifice.
Not a vegetable sacrifice.
Vegetables came from working the ground.
God had cursed the ground.
Therefore vegetables were not acceptable.
God killed animals to clothe Adam and Eve following their sin.
Just as the animal skins were symbolic of God covering their sins the blood sacrifice was symbolic of Jesus' death covering their sins.
Jesus became a man not a vegetable.
Instead of following God's pattern Cain offered his good works.

Hope this helps.

Because Abel was a true son of God, he had a true revelation of what God requires as a sacrifice. Cain neva had that revelation because he wasnt a son of God.

1 John 3:12
Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother's were righteous.

Cain gave his sacrifice, with pride. Able with humility.

because fruit and vegetables are valuable but not a valuable as meat. as long as you garden you will have vegetables, they will never run out. and as long as trees and plants are not damaged they will create fruit. but animals have to grow up to mate, they have to be cared for, and they (at least then) were not as plentiful as fruits and vegetables.

Cain's sacrifice wasn't really a sacrifice for himself. its not sacrificing if you give up something meaningless or so popular that you will not be effected.
to sacrifice is to give up something needed and special due to not only your need/desire of it but because it will be hard to get more of it.
today some sacrifice during lent and even though it may be small and abundant things they give away, they abstain from them for 40 days. they do not offer up something trivial but deny themselves something they like. it is a sacrifice.
