My 77 year old husband went into to hospital (private) in June to have a Knee replacement. 6weeks 5days and 3 trips to the theatre later he came home. Yes he had contracted Golden Staph. He has lost 13kgs because he doesn't feel like eating. He is now on two very very strong antibotics which we have been told could be for 2-3 years, but as a side effect has a very nasty/itchy rash from neck to groin. We have tried Pine Tar, metho, oitments from our own doctor and from a Skin Specialist nothing takes the itch away for more than 2 hours. We have even tried his own urine. Anyone got any old fashion remedies? We will try anything within reason.

oh crap, this is an awful infection....my dad had a really bad acase of it and nearly died....and of course it was due to stupid doctors not doing their jobs. My dad was very ill.....but the fact that hes being treated is very good....my dad didnt know what was wrong with him for ages thats why he was so ill. My dad is completely better now....and it didnt take 2 to 3 years once he was on the medicine....it should be alot quicker than that. The skin...well at the same time my dad was ill he had shingles...so he tried all these skin treatments as well...but not alot does it. there is acupuncture? sometimes that helps with rashs but it didnt help us. Just try to keep his spirits up....it will be over soon and he will be good as new:-) Best wishes to you both.

Hello,

Sorry to hear about your husband's illness. Just spent 6 weeks in the hospital with a staff infection...complication of a disease called Variegate Porphyria which causes very itchy skin lesions. I have tried every anti-itch ointment known to man...natural and Rx. Not one of them worked. Finally, a friend suggested ice! It works better than anything else I've tried although I'm not certain it will stop the itching longer than the couple of hours you talked about. At least it's free and completely non-toxic. Good luck to you and your husband!

A person's survival from any sort of serious infection at that age would depend on many factor, such as overall health at the time the infection was contracted. Too many variables for anyone here to guess.

You might want to try selenium sulfide shampoo, Selsun blue in case the antibiotics allowed the natural tinea on everybody to take over. Good luck in any case.

2 hours doesn't sound so bad. If you can find it, aloe vera gel with lidocaine has worked well for me.
