Is there anyone that can help me? I was discharged 3 years ago from the navy. Always was an outstanding sailor with mp's an ep's evals, even had recommendation an pending orders to spec war..I abused alcohol at that time and found myself in a fight at the very end of my 1st enlistment...I recieved a general under honorable and an RE-4 Discharge...I never wanted to get out and had plans on going to swcc school..Now im most likely past the age waivers for my dream but i would like to go back... Can anyone help me?

Talk to your National Guard recruiter, they are the only ones who will accept RE-4 discharges. There should be a letter code next to your RE-4, and that is your SEPERATION code. They will look at what those letters are. I would check your DD-214 and see if there are any 3 letter combinations next to your discharge, and then check this website to see what they mean.

That will give you a better idea of what the NAVY said you did. If, as you intimated, it was about alcohol abuse, you will probably have to prove the the Guard that you have been through some sort of rehabilitiation or 12 step program successfully. They give out very few waivers, and it is an involved process, but, occasionally, they will let an RE-4 in.

the AG (Attorney General) can "upgrade" your discharge to any code other then RE-4... but with an RE-4, you won't join a military branch again.

Talk to your local Reserve recruiter, as they tend to know more abou tthese kinds of things than th eActive Duty guys do.

Good luck!

the ONLY Branch that will consider your Re4 on a case by case basis is the national Guard, but Alcohol abuse is not taken lightly.
