I am assuming that you are talking $20,000.00 U.S.
I would suggest the following, Toyota, Nissan, Subaru, Saturn, Honda, Ford (Fusion), Chrysler (Neon), and Mazda. As for models, well, that really depends on your needs and taste. Below is a little advice on how to negotiate and the price breakdown:
MSRP (Sticker) INVOICE
$20,000.00 Base Price $18,000.00
$3500.00 Options (PKG) $ 2500.00
$600.00 Destination $600.00
$500.00 Dealer Prep $100.00 (maybe)
$24,600.00 Total $21,200.00
Now, if you had a trade-in that was worth WHOLESALE of $1000.00. A dealer could show you a trade-in value of $4400.00 using the above example. ($1000.00 plus $3400.00 between MSRP and Invoice) And then, sell you the car for $20,200.00 plus tax/title/lics.
One thing to keep in mind that the Actual Cost of the car is less than invoice. The dealer has something refered to as Holdback, factory dealer incentives, whatever, but basically it is an amount that the factory pays the dealer if he sells the car during a certain time period. Getting into that amount is tricky and requires some work on your part. Also, the dealer makes some money on financing....The Bank will quote a percentage rate of 5.25% and the dealer will recieve a small amount of the intrest you will pay on the loan. That money is not a whole lot ($500 or $600) and extremely diffucult to get a hold of. Finally, there are a lot of 0.0% deals floating around, keep in mind that no one is going to loan money with no intrest. You will pay for it in the price of the car. Good Luck
