regardless of the type of reel it is, if the line was put on "backwards" then it will simply tangle. Backwards meaning which way the line came off from the main spool, onto the reel. When I was working in a tackle shop, it was something we had to pay attention to at the linewinder. If you hold a filler spool through the holes in it with a dowel or pencil, for a spinning reel the line must come off from the bottom. For any other type of reel the line must come off the top. This will be important because if it comes off the other way, it will want to just fly off the spool and cause tangles.

All you have to do is tie the line around the spool on the reel then the short end also is tied. The Arbor Knor is used to attach the fishing line to the fishing reel, or "Arbor".

Tying it: The second overhand knot is essential. Some fishermen recommend winding the loop twice round the arbor before making the first half hitch. This increases the friction which may be useful on some of the more polished reels. After forming the knot, snug it down tightly around the drum.

Advantages: The Arbor knot is simple, easily learned and effective.

Well first of all is it an open or a closed face reel? Because if it's an open-faced reel you don't have to feed the line through the eyes. Tie the line on your reel and just reel it in, until you enough on there. But if it's closed face you have to feed the line through the eyes and the cap. Then tie the line to the reel, put the cap back on the reel. Then reel in, until you have enough line. Then at the top eye cut the line and put a hook on it.

The line probably was put on with the "line memory"(learning the curve of the purchase spool) going the opposite direction as the reel pickup. The line memory can be reduced either by repeated use, or by simulating use by attaching line to a pole(tree) attached with a swivel and stretching all the line while out of the reel.

To avoid tangles, you need two people. One stands about 10 yards away and faces the line spool label toward you and holds the line tight. Then you start reeling line onto the spool.
