is the 7 train that goes all the way to main st., flushing (the last stop) a fairly safe stop to get off at?

Yes its safe...very busy area. It's like a smaller version of chinatown. The 7 train leaves you right at the corner of Roosevelt Avene and Main Street (Old Navy)

Most of the people there mind their own business...sometimes during the school year you may get a few rowdy teenagers.

There are always people around the area since most of the restaurants in the area close around 3-4am. And a lot of bus stops are in the vicinity.

You'll be fine.

Main Street is always crowded no matter what time it seems. I've been on the 7 train there near midnight or so and I still can't get a seat (and there was no game at Shea either; I'm not kidding!). Main St is also where a lot of buses turn around so you have a lot of traffic from that respect too.
You should be fine, especially if you're always aware of what's going around you at all times, and this applies to wherever you are, not just in Flushing.

Yes, quite safe. Main Street is always crowded. You are going have to walk a few blocks however once you get off the 7 train to stand on Main Street. The folks in the area has mind their own business.
