Does anyone know what this could be? They sort of started off as red spost and turned black. He is outside mostly and I bathe him once a week and use baby shampoo and also Sergeants tick and flea shampoo for fleas as he constanly plays with stray cats. I use Frontline on him but doesn't seem to do anything for the fleas. Someone told me to use Avon Skin so Soft, so I just tried that this week and see if it repells the fleas.

Will these black spots go away? They started at the bottom of him belly and when I bathed him on Saturday I noticed they are now all over his back too. Not sore or raised, just flat black spots.

He is white and brown/gold.

Please help!

Wow, I guess this is normal then? I usually take him to get groomed and flea treatment every 2 months and I do bathing about once a week or week and a half. Since I bathe him often it freaked me out because I had not seen him get these black spots on his back - they started down in his "area" though and eventually transferred on to his back and seems everywhere below his neck. I know it is not flea dirt, it is just his skin turned black. I keep his hair really short now because of the heat and still hadn't noticed the skin until last week.

I guess I will stop the Sergeant use and the 6 month treatment is up anyway so I have to get new type of flea protection and I will hunt for a new dog shampoo.

I will also treat the backyard for fleas and see how it turns out.

Thanks a lot I guess i can stop worrying now.

It is common for these dogs to have areas of pigment on their skin, especially if their fur has patches of color. If its not any type of wound or scab, this is probably the case. I've even seen pure white dogs with dark age spots on their skin. (Usually not black, but lighter brown)
You usually just see these spots on the skin when the fur is wet.
Try switching to Advantage or Advantix. If he plays with stray cats, he is probably getting fleas from them. The flea meds usually don't kill a flea the second it jumps on the dog. The flea has to bite and ingest the medicine before it gets killed.
Treat the yard for fleas, as fleas will live in the grass and only go on the animals for food.

Black Shih Tzus

If you are talking about large black spots that is normal for a shih tzu. They develop the black spots when they get older it is perfectly natural for the breed. If you are talking about flea dirt which is very small and just looks like dirt on the skin it is very hard to remove but with regular bathing and cleaning and getting rid of the fleas it will go away.
If your dog is a year old I would take him to a groomer and have him dipped and then contact a vet and ask them what to use to stop the fleas.
If the black spots seem to be part of the skin do not worry it is just the natural skin coloring for a shih tzu.

My shih tzu also has black spots in several places on stomach and back. She is 14 yrs. old and the spots have been there for as long as I have had her..not to worry.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aU8JA

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

sounds like normal pigmentation. Some dogs develop more pigment on their skin as they mature too.

All white dogs have some spotting on the skin.. it may be black, brown or liver colored spots. Take a look at hairless Chinese Cresteds, you will NEVER find one as an adult that is completely pink.. they all have spotting or markings of some kind on the skin.

They will not go away.
Black spots are just extra pigment, that is all and any dog can have them, pure or mixed breed. Think of it like a beauty mark or freckle on a person.
