holograms require continuous coherent lightwaves that come from a laser. these strike solid objects and reflect back to the source. the reflected wave mixes with the incident wave and forms an interference pattern that can be captured on photo film. after the film is developed, it will "recreate" the objects whose reflections caused the interference pattern when illuminated by the same laser. thus you can't take hologram pictures except in total darkness because otherwise the photo film would be exposed by the daylight.
