Astoria is a really nice neighborhood. Consider yourself lucky you were able to find an affordable apartment in Astoria which is just over the river from Manhattan. As far as safe quite safe compared to other NYC neighborhoods.

It'll be loud, but it's safe. A friend of mine used to live about a block from a subway station in Astoria; I always felt safe in her neighborhood.

Safety is relative, that is to say that as long as you are always aware of your surroundings, give the appearance of a resident, not a tourist you should be fine. There is no distinguishable difference in crime living near a subway or elevated rail than not. The only difference you will experience is increased noise levels

astoria is a great area. of course its safe to live there. just carry pepperspray if u are fearful. i would not travel at night and be prepared to hear the rumbling loud train go by and be ok with the sound.
