You would be issued a rifle or pistol if you are deployed/stationed in a location like Iraq or Afghanistan where everyone carries a weapon. If you are stationed in other locations in the Middle East then you will not carry a firearm. Just because you have to carry a firearm doesn't mean your going to see "action." On all bases in Iraq you carry your firearm at all times on base because it is a hostile environment and you never know when something might happen so everyone is armed. You might never step outside the wire, but you will still carry a weapon.
Throughout your military career you will get range time as you must qualify every so many months (6-36 months depending on AFSC). Believe me when you say you want to see "a little action," no you don't. As a medical apprentice you would see the results of "a little action" and you don't want to see that stuff happen right next to you. Stick to fixing those folks up and saving their lives.

Med Tech in the AF is a huge AFSC, and you won't know until you are almost through with school where you will be going or doing.(can be anything from a major trama center to a one man clinic in the middle of nowhere) My daughters first assignment was working in a Pediatrics clinic (13 miles from home no less). 3 years later she went to Ramstein Germany flying medical evacuation (just in time for Iraq) She will tell you strait up, flights to Dover are a real bummer, and no you never get use to it.
Everyone in the AF goes to the range to qualify. As a med tech the only other way is when you fly there will be an M-4 on the plane. Do remember that if you are good with a gun, and you want range time, almost every military instillation has a rifle team. Lots more fun to plink with a National Match Rifle (that will be on your own time tho')

The answer would be no. POGs in the USAF fire the M16 every two/three years depending. That is the only time you will ever see the range. You may get the chance to qual. with the M9 but don't count on it. The only time you will be issued a weapon is if you are deploying, and as soon as you get their you will put it in the armory and not take it out again till you come home. Sorry to burst your bubble their kid. But if you want to see some 'action' 1, don't be a medical apprentice, and 2, don't join the USAF.

there is no way to see a little action now a days your MOS either puts you in the fight or you are in the rear with the gear.

I am not sure if they are in the airforce but navy corpsmen asigned to marine units are given a side arm. 9mm now use to be a 45 cal.

even if you are given a weapon you will not spend much time on the range.

Even in the Marines where every Marine is a rifleman first the average marine only spends a limited amount of time on a live fire range and a Marine who's MOS is not combat related spends even less time on the range.

of course the range now consist of Iraqi towns and the targets move so they are getting a bit more trigger time.

hope that helps you out

Very few in the AF are actually issued weapons, outside of Security Forces. And the AF is not ground combat... we are not where the action is.

Even when hubby (aircraft maintainer) was sent to recover plane parts from a crash 20 K from the Iraqi border, he and his partner drove out in a pick up with nothing more than a tool box! No escort, no weapon just in case, nothing!!

As one fellow said, there are often shooting clubs either on base or just off base. That said, if you get sent to USAFE, don't plan on bringing a gun with you. Not sure about PACAF, but it's not authorized here.

In case your tuition grades are excellent enough, practice for scientific university and have the army pay for it. They pay full training they usually also pay you as an officer at the same time you are in clinical university. This could be the fine manner for you to go. Army medics are in actual fact emts. You have got to be in for greater than four years to fairly opt for up things that could be priceless for clinical university. The Air drive most of the time has good clinical training however scientific institution is extreme and it is a lot better to move to medical university at the same time you might be nonetheless young and no longer married. I worked for a main medical tuition and i will tell you that you'll no longer have a lot of a life while you're in. I also knew a navy Captain who was once in medical tuition and the army paid all of his lessons and charges.

The only gun you are going to see is the M-16 while at basic training. A hospital isn't really a good place to have people walking around with guns. Thats why we have security forces. If you end up deploying you will train on 9MM
