Today, I had a couple of friends over. I served some snacks---corn chips, bean dip, beer, soda, and salsa. Well, this food had some---ahem---adverse effects on my friend Sam. He started farting. At one point, he tore one off that was so loud that one of the girls thought there was a drive-by shooting going on outside. When she found out what it really was, she got mad at my friend Sam.

Question is, has anything like this ever happened to you? Have you ever gotten "gassed up" while in a public place and had to choose between letting it go or restraining yourself?

It happened to me once in Jr High School. We were having a tour of the library and everyone was quiet "because its a library" and the librarian was explaining to our class how to use the Dewey Decimal System when I all of a sudden farted really loud. It totally happened without a warning and I didn't even feel it coming, it just happened. I tried to pretend it wasn't me but all the other kids were standing around me and they knew. Not to mention that it smelled really bad. Everyone started laughing uncontrollably and I was mortified. For the rest of the school year I was teased and no one let me forget about it. I actually had to go to a different school the next year because even at the beginning of the new school year people who remembered the incident were calling me names and making fun of it even still. Thank God that was over 20 years ago, but I still have not forgotten about it.

It's bound to happen to everyone..sooner or later. In polite society, one should try to restrain themselves till they can get to a more private location, but this is not always possible. In those cases, do offer an apology! Myself, well...I've blame the dog on a car trip, and at Lake Powell with 12 real good friends, I believe the warning shout was "FIRE IN THE HOLE!!!" They could run for fresher air, or forever hold their breath!. The ones that make funny sounds, well, ya just gotta join in the laughter, no matter if it was you or not. Oh yea, fun and good times with body noises! Thanks for taking my mind off more pressing matters...I really needed the laugh!!

Oh, I just about forgot, there is a product called BEANO ..one takes it with the first bite of food, and Wow! It actually works! My husband said it was the best $10 bucks he ever spent! It is also helpful to help the gas travel to its natural outlet by , using your hands as a rolling pin, start up under the ribs and roll your hands down the abdomen thus speeding the gas on it's way. The BEANO works best!

If you are in India, go the pharmacy for purchasing 'Garlic Pearls' of Ranbaxy Laboratories over the counter. It is not a drug. It is something like a dietary supplement. Three tablets a day, morning, afternoon and night, just before food or after, would solve all your problems. If you are abroad, check for the same if it is available there also. There are so many other remedies too, but they are available in India only.

Ha ha -- true story. My wife and I were at a Sizzler's in St. Joseph, Missouri, when I ripped off a pretty good one. Only she and I heard it, BUT a couple waitresses were discussing the somewhat less than perfect weather outside a few tables away, and the exact instant after I ripped it, one asked the other "Is that thunder?" (referring to actual thunder). Both my wife and I about peed our pants laughing.

Actually, I remember in a packed movie threatre years ago during a "touching" scene of "LOVE ME TENDER" I felt a really powerful built up of gas inside me. Not knowing what to do, I just thought "Oh what the hell"...and pushed it out like there was a cannon ball inside me. At first I thought only the people close to me would know who it was but my cousin, who was two seats away exclaimed loudly..."MIKE"!!!

The polite thing to do would have been to step outside or into a restroom to "let it rip".

Granted, flatulence is something that happens to all of us. however, there are ways to handle it in a discreet manner as to not offend others around us.

After eating in a restaurant one quiet night, we were walking towards the car when I became flatulent. Tried hard to prevent it but was unsuccessful. One of our companions asked "what's that sound?" (referring to the flatulence) and I innocently responded (holding up my cellular phone) "do you like my new ringtone?".

Hahaha!

Yes, I have had this problem in public, its terribly embarrassing, but sometimes theres just no other choice, the gas escapes any way to my embarrassment.
