We just moved into a new house. In the formal dining area we have room for a table that fits 6 chairs with enough room around. We could add another leaf to the table to extend it to fit 8 chairs. Should we buy 6 or 8 chairs?

Get 8 if you have somewhere you can store 2 of them either in the same room (away from the table) or in a garage/shed/loft or whatever.

If you really have nowhere to store the spare 2 I would think twice about buying them as 8 chairs squashed round the table will be uncomfortable if you don't often have a need to seat that many people.

Do you really think you are going to use this room that often?

I say get 6 Chairs. Save the money. Unless the scale of the room calls for the table to be "opened" up to a larger size.

Because say you do have a party or gathering, chances are you are going to have more than 8 people anyway so you are going to drag in some other mismatching chairs. I have a formal set that seats 6 closed and can stretch out to seat 8 or upto 12. I have 6 seats. I keep the table "open" to the scale of the rooms to the 3 various sized houses they've been in and it's always been at the 6 seater size. It just seems they make all houses to fit a 6 person dining table (where you could open it up, but the scale would be off and a tighter fit)

We have 8 but don't keep the leaf on. We keep the chairs against the walls incase we need them them. Like we have a hutch and we sit one on each side of it..I think it looks really good. It kinda adds to the room makes it look nice. So I say 8!

If you think you will need them, buy 8.
When they are not being used at the table, they can be placed in a decorative manner by a small table or along a wall. The table doesn't have to match, cover it with a cloth and place a small lamp on it. You know what to do.
Depends on the size of your home and its furnishings.

8. If you don't get them, and you wind up needing them, you'll kick yourself. Just get the 8. Really.
