Who else feels that prisoners should be doing more work, to pay for their own prison costs?

And what kinds of jobs do you think they should or should not be doing?

I have to agree. Prisons should be self-supporting.

Hmmmm...how about prison work groups to work the farms where farmers are hiring illegal aliens? Offer them prison labor with gaurds for 1/2 the price they are paying for illegal/migrant workers.
Might as well deal with 2 problems at the same time.

The huge problem is; what work can you trust to be done correctly by people that are forced to work in a hostile environment and what you can trust them with doing?

Any job involving credit card numbers or personal information from customers is too risky; at best, only production work for certain products should be considered.

In the past, they have made license plates. Other "reforms" to teach them "job skills" that they can use in the real world, such as being a call center or a catalog company have backfired and inmates have engaged not only in identity theft, but pursuing "false" relationships against people on the "outside" that have no way of knowing they are prisoners.

Other efforts, such as manufacturing car parts, and also encountered problem such as producing inferior quality products and sometime outright sabotage.

Likely, the best hope is work release for those that show promise and hope per a therapist and through their own efforts by behaving while in prison and while pursuing additional eductation while in prison.

I agree 100%, it costs thousands, of millions to pay for prisoners to get three hots and a cot (food and a bed) while many americans are going hungry and dont have suitable shelter... They should be working their @sses off in there!

the prisoners do menial work the private prisons contract them out! more work could be better, also the lazy welfare fraud cases which i believe is in the millions.. should be made to work.. any work and education

I think murderers and rapists are children that were unloved by a culture. I blame us for their hatred towards others.
I also think that drugs are a freedom,,,,, how does one persons drug use hurt another person,,,, why is alcohol legal and weed not... despite the evidence that alcohol is much more dangerous... i say make drugs legal and stop funding gangs that promote violence,,,,, are we not free in america to do as we please as long as it does not hurt another.....
The jails are full of poor people that were born in to poverty and the criminal culture created by drugs being illegal.....
