Shiats believe that the succession of the Prophet should have been passed down to Imam Ali (a.s.) ( his son-in-law, his cousin, n the person he raised)... they also believe the Prophet appointed him to be his successor... during lots of speeches... like Ghadir Al-Khom...
BUT Sunnis elected a successor right after the Prophet died... Imam Ali (a.s.) wasn't present during the election, in Saqifa, cz he was burying the Prophet...
Shiats don't like to kill anyone... they just want to live in peace...
Long ago... centuries... a fatwa was given by an extremist... that if they kill 6 or 7 Shiats... they'd end up in heaven... n since then... lots have been killed...
BUT... such fatwa doesn't exist anywhere in Shiasm...
http://www.al-islam.org/peshawar/3.6.html
http://www.al-islam.org/peshawar/3.7.html
ALSO... not long ago... about a month or less... someone gave fatwa to bomb n destroy ALL Shiat mosques (or holy sites)... NOT ONLY the ones that are in Iraq... BUT ALSO the ones that are in Iran as well...
I remember when I was a kid... they also bombed Imam Reza's (a.s.) holy shrine... n lots of women, children, n men were martyred...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mashhad
Oh... n forgot to say... lots of ppl (I've seen some here on Y!A)... say that Saddam was good n blah blah blah... cz he mass murdered lots of Shiats in Iraq... I still have the hate mails!

Sunni and Shiite are not branches of Islamic religion. They are schools of thought. In this context, schools of thought means that there are group of Muslims scholar who have different of opinions in interpreting certain religious principles (generally the minor principles).
Certain Muslims follow the Sunni School of Thought, whereas others follow the Shiite (also written as Syiah) School of Thought.
Fighting between these groups normally happen between the extremist. What I meant by the word extremist here is the group of people who think their method of thinking is the only right way to interpret Islam and the other Muslims who do not follow them are wrong.
Please take note majority of Muslims do not fight each other just because of different School of Thought.
Addition:
I agree with the answer given by Lawrence of Arabia.
To Lawrence of Arabia. Could you inform us all what is the date (at least the year) when Imam Khomeni and Imam Muhammad al Ghazali met and pray together. It is nice to hear two highly respected scholars from Shiah and Sunni get together and give a good example to their followers.

Shia and Sunna Murderers are not Muslims, they are disguised criminals...
Imam AL Shia "Al Koomeny" Met Imam AL Sunna "Muhammad AL Ghazaly" and they prayed with each other.. and declared that the two sects have some differences which are slight between the two sects...
Actually, I have no concern about "who should have been the caliph 1400 years ago" and Fighting or killing a man for this idea is ignorance... Jahl !
If Allah سبحانه و تعالى wanted Sir\ Ali to be the Caliph.. He would have been, nothing happens against Allah's will.. but Allah wanted to test us.. If Ali wanted to be the Caliph and wanted to obey the Prophet's order he'd have fought for it.. he was a strong beloved man with popularity.. but he chose to close his door on himself and avoid Fitna.. That we are searching for today....
Ali Avoided the Fitna and we are looking forward for it!
And apparently, Few succeeded and most of us failed the test. He gave us an example saying:
The relations of Ali, Omar, Othman PB on them all, should not matter the Real Muslim of today.. it's STRANGE that many Muslims, even American Muslims, are ruled by tyrants and they don't talk, but they talk about the democracy that should have been applied 1400 years ago. I have no concern about their actions and Allah wont ask me for it...
Al Qaeda is not Sunni as the Sunna sect is peaceful.. So the Shia sect is peaceful.. But extremists ruin it everywhere...
Hitler was Christian though Christians are really peaceful.

You know what Fatemeh? We Muslims really deserve what the Western world is doing to us....
.
Edit:
The meeting of AL Ghazali and AL Khomeini was on 1980 as I remember.

Just political difference.
All Muslims are one.
In fact All Human race is one, we ignore common points and give un-necessary importance to minor differences.
Having differences is a sign of healthy mind, progressive thing and vision, but fighting on these bases, is sign of sick-minded thinking and narrow vision.

The Sunnis have a sunny outlook on life, they always see the bright side. The Shiites have a sh itty attitude, they're always complaining. So the Sunnis kill the Shiites because of their crap attitude - it brings everyone down. The Shiites kill the Sunnis because they can't stand the Julie Andrews bullsh it. Therefore, there will never be peace.
