I would hope most people wouldn't jump to conclusions as to what other people's tattoos stand for. Everyone's reasoning is different than everyone else's. A dove, which is a symbol for peace, could stand for something totally different to someone else. It could stand for a family member, or a child or a pet, basically anything. You get what is personal to you, what has meaning for you. Most people will not question it. If they do, and if you want, go ahead and explain it.

Doves are a beautiful thing and relate to freedom and peace. Your tattoo should be symbolic to you, and if someone else understands its a plus. Its yours forever not the public's be you, be free, get what you want. And always follow your own direction whether it be behind someone or leading others! GOOD LUCK enjoy :-)

the first thing that came to mind was peace, and freedom. Doves fly free and are tranquil. I don't think anything religious of it. Also who care what other people think. You are going to be the one with it and it obviously has meaning for you. That's all that counts.

it would be hard to escape the religous tie of the dove, which in the story of noah's ark was the symbol that the flood was over and everything would be ok, but tattoos are very personal expressions and I do not think you should wory about what some one else could think it meant. anyone who matters is gonna ask you what it means to you anyway

Doves usually represent peace and love. Or maybe they just like doves...

Sounds Catholic. I just saw Angels & Demons, and the main character said something about the dove being the angel of mercy or peace, or something. :)
