the waves generated by the generator are composed of infinitely many modes. Each mode has a particular mode shape and natural (modal) frequency. That's how engineers called them. Mathematicians called these model frequencies eigen-frequencies, and the mode shapes the eigen-functions.
The fundamental (1st) mode is usually the dominant mode, and can be considered the fundamental natural frequency of the generator.
