Hi! Puberty occurs earlier in females than in males. Many changes in the body occur which may cause awkwardness in the growing boy or girl. These changes are all due to the increase production of hormones. First sign in males is testicular enlargement. Growing armpit hair occurs later. We have what we call the SMR or sexual maturity rating both in males and girls wherein it is divided into 5 stages. Stage 1 is the stage wherein body changes seen are still the same as in the pre-pubertal stage; stage 5 is similar to an adult. Armpit hair growth usually occurs in stage 4 so that is towards the end of puberty. The end of puberty does not mean the closure of growth plates. Peak in growth(height) for males occurs in SMR 4 at ages 14-16 years then becomes slower from ages 17-20. Growth plates usually close after the 20th year. (These are the norm;others may deviate)

Yes, armpit hair means that testosterone levels are increasing but as for growth plates, that is another matter, roughly about 18 yrs of age for boys. There are other factors which determine when the growth plates close.

Androgens are male sex hormones. They include Testosterone. They are produced in the testes of males and in the adrenal glands of both sexes.. They cause growth of armpit and groin hair of males and females.Linear growth only partially depends on androgens.
