God was letting us know that because of the way that we were created life does not work out so good if you disobey these rules.

The purpose of the Ten Commandments is to show us how badly we need a savior. They are impossible to keep. Jesus pointed out in the sermon on the mount that to look at a person in lust is adultery, or to be angry without a cause is murder. Here he is showing how impossible they are to keep. The Ten Commandments are to put us into a bewildered state so that we will know that we are spiritually bankrupt, that we cannot do it on our own and we need help.
They still do this job today. They are to show us that we need Jesus.
To those of us who are saved the Ten Commandments are now a guide line, but we are no longer under the law. We are under grace, but as Romans 6:1 states, "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?" No, we still do our best, but not for salvation. The law cannot bring us salvation. Only Jesus can bring us salvation. We do our best because we love our Heavenly Father.
However, we are to concentrate our efforts onto the Two Great Commandments:
Mat 22:36 Master, which [is] the great commandment in the law?
Mat 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Mat 22:38 This is the first and great commandment.
Mat 22:39 And the second [is] like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Mat 22:40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

the Ten Commandments is the law given to Moses from God
and in our time we can't not be justified by the law of Moses
And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.
The Acts 13:39
in the Time of Jesus Christ the Law had been change.
For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.
Hebrews 7:12
King James Version
and the example is this.
in Moses Time:
Thou shalt not commit adultery.
Exodus 20:14
in Christ Time:
But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
Matthew 5:28

The purpose of the Ten Commandments is to give us direction and a guide for how God wants us to live our lives. Our adherence to these laws are how we are to be judged in front of the Lord after death. We are to view them today with much respect and sincerity. We must follow them [as well as the teachings of Jesus Christ] in order to lead a life acceptable by God.

The ten commandments are God's laws.
The spirits were supposed to live according to God's laws in heaven. But apparently, they didn't obey them as they should had, so God booted them out and locked them up inside the chamber which is known as hell. Those sinners who couldn't or didn't live according to God's laws shall remained locked up in hell until they learn not to blaspheme.
What helps make it tough for them sinners in hell to learn not to blaspheme is that they don't know where they are actually at nor do they remember from where they had came from. All they know is that they are where they are and are convinced that they had never died and delivered into hell yet.
All of those sinners are to remain in hell until the day God's son left them up out of there. He's already returned, it's just a matter of time when that will happen.
Those sinners are supposed to be learning how to live under God's laws, but over time some of the men foolishly rewrote the laws according to how they want to live, and so the sinners are mistakenly living under men's laws, instead of under God's laws.
Why does the bible says that the people are sinners?
Could they be the sinners that were delivered into hell?
That's right, they wouldn't know, because the dead will not remember their past life.
Am I implying that all of the souls inside the people are the sinners that had already died and delivered into hell?
That would sound so foolish wouldn't it, because isn't hell supposed to be a place where sinners will be able to feel pain and suffering?
Now where on earth would you find such foolishness, pain and suffering?
It's no wonder why the bible says that both, hell and earth, is located in the same place, below heaven.

We are to try to obey them as best we can and use them to bring sinners to Christ!
I'll give you an example below.
Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. Gal. 3:24
The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul. Ps. 19:7
What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.” Rom. 7:7
And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment. Heb. 9:27
We are judged by the Ten Commandments.
Ever told a lie?
Ever hated anyone? See 1 John 3:15
Ever lusted after someone? See. Matt. 5:27-28
Ever blasphemed?
For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all. James 2:10
Lawbreakers go to hell.
But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” Rev. 21:8
This is clear and humbling. However God made a way so we wouldn't have to go to hell. Jesus (God in flesh) came to earth, lived a sinless life, and was crucified on our behalf. He rose three days later defeating death and in turn giving us an escape route from hell. But Jesus did command us to repent. That means to turn from sin to God. The perfect example of repentance is found in Psalm 51.
“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” Mark 1:15
I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. Luke 13:3
Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3
You see when you repent God gives you a new heart and new desires and they are desires to serve Him. As a result you are biblically born again! That my friend is good news!

The main purpose of the Commandments is not so much to dictate, but to guide us all to what is right and life-giving. Instead of restricting our actions, the Decalogue -- or any other law, for that matter -- protect our freedom and humanity in (and as a) community.
Hope this helps! =]

Personally I believe that the 10 commandments are in place as a healthy way to live, both mentally, spiritually and physically. Certainly none of them are detrimental to your health or anyone elses IE:
Do not commit adultery
Do not covet (be happy with what you have)
Do not lie
Do not steal
The golden rule.
I think they are more or less perfectly suited for today's Society.
Have a great one.

They are like a mirror to show us where we are dirty. They will not clean (save) us but just show us. (Rom.3:20)
Anything that God has spoken NEVER changes. Ps.89:34
The 10 commandments were written by God's finger in stone and spoken by God.
Only the ones who keep ALL of God's commandments will have right to the tree of life. Rev. 22:14

They were to set morals for the people. They defined what to do and not do. Today they are just fine. If people actually followed them, we would not need all of the other thousands of laws that we have. Jesus said all of the commandments were based on two, Love God, and Love your neighbors. If we all did this, we would only have two laws on our books.
