What? I'm a Christian, and an American, and haven't heard about that. It must be a hardcore Fundamentalist thing...the same types who are afraid of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.

For the same "reason" they think a certain Teletubby is supposedly gay - irrational knee-jerk hysteria towards something that seemingly diverts attention away from their myopic belief system. Remember, Rock-n-Roll is a tool of the Devil. So are all comic books (not just manga). And alcohol. And television. AND dancing. Heck, EVERYTHING is a tool of the Devil when you're a fundie!

Magic is something that God told his people to stay away from. Magic is something detestable to God. Why would a Christian that claims to love God choose to enjoy a form of entertainment that God detests? Jesus said his followers can be known by their fruits, that is by their works.
Deuteronomy 18:10-12
10 There should not be found in you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, anyone who employs divination, a practicer of magic or anyone who looks for omens or a sorcerer, 11 or one who binds others with a spell or anyone who consults a spirit medium or a professional foreteller of events or anyone who inquires of the dead. 12 For everybody doing these things is something detestable to Jehovah, and on account of these detestable things Jehovah your God is driving them away from before you.
So this is not a fundamentalist teaching. By loving God, true Christians choose to find entertainment acceptable by him. When we love someone, we do not do things offensive to them.

I guess that traces back to the whole black magic and witchcraft thing. That's just my guess.
Also, it's anime and manga. The Japanese don't trail their plurals with an s.

there are fundies who always see their devil in anything that uses/encourages imagination - which is what they really fear.
Star Wars. Dungeons & Dragons. Pokemon. now Harry Potter.
same old story, different target.

because they are amazingly gullible and are always on the alert for their little devils, just in case their god is watching.
