its healthy to lose 1-2 lbs a week - if you lose more than that then its just water weight and muscle which also means you are slowing down metabolism and will gain it all back.
find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio is the only fat burning exercise and burns fat all over your body (running, jogging, swimming, spinning, elliptical etc) 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), weight training a few days a week but never work on the same muscle group two days in a row (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

Dear Losing Weight,
Your post caught my eye, and I think I might be able to help you. That is great that you are taking the initiative in taking control of your health. Kudos to you. First, I just want to make sure that you are taking steps to improve your health rather than just trying to satisfy a desire to look like someone else. As a woman, I understand how much stress is placed on body image - so I will say that there is no "correct" size for a person. Every body is different and so it is better to throw out concepts of what size you should be, in the end, all that matters is how you feel about yourself (which I would hope would be positive). But to answer your question: A structured exercise and nutrition program is the best way for you to go. Your exercise program should consist of weight training 3 days a week, and a sound nutrition program focusing on increasing your protein intake and reducing high glycemic and processed foods. Instead of measuring your progress by how much weight you lose on the scale, you should measure your progress by how much body fat you lose which cannot be measured by an ordinary scale. Your goal here is to lose body fat, not muscle. If you stuck religously to your program, I would estimate that you could lose about a 1-1.5 lbs of fat a week. If you maintain this rate of fat loss, you would reach your goal of 160 lbs. in about 9-12 months, which is a very realistic and healthy time frame. This has turned out to be a very lengthy reply, so if you have questions, I would be happy to answer them privately for you in e-mail. I can also set you up on a meal plan as well. I hope this has helped! Good luck.

I think the best way to loose weight is counting calories.every normal people needs sth between 1500 to 2000 k/c per day so if u want to loose ur weight gradually,u should reduce it to 1000/1200.Rememeber ,eat 5/6 little portions in a day.Don't eat after 7 pm.don't eliminate ur breakfast.exercise about 30 minutes every day.U WILL MAKE IT.the duration of time is depending on ur goal weight but if ur extra weight is not more than 10, so 3 months is ok.
good luck

it all depends on how bad you want it...for me it took me about 6 months to lose 45 lbs (50 more to go =D) ...all i can say is start off slow then build your way up, for example if you cant run a continous mile run as much as you can untill u can get up to 2 or 3 miles a day...on average a mile should be ran in under 8 minutes...but anyways...eat the right stuff....no cakes, candy, cookies or fast food....once in a while is fine but not once a week more like once every 2 weeks...and most most most of all...STAY CONSISTANT WITH YOU WEIGHT LOSS! and you will see results
and remeber its not overnight it didnt take u over night to gain so it wont be overnight to lose either

I suggest you get into activities that would help you sweat out. Less food intake and better yet, get into a weight loss management program. In my case, I've lost over 19lbs in just five weeks. that's without going to the gym or doing some routinary exercises. I took meal replacements and it helped me out really.
