You better check your states regulations. In NM jug fishing is not legal, but a trot line is if you attach a paper with all your information and check it every 24 hours. Also it can only have a certain number of hooks on it.
I have set trot lines in coves, along banks and the like. Just tie one end to a fallen tree or rock on a bank, after baiting all the hooks, tie the other end to another tree or rock. If not one available, tie a small rock to one end and run it out and drop it sort of like and anchor. Make sure you mark it some how so you remember where it is (a GPS is great for this) or just look around and remember the area. You don't want to make it too obvious though Like tying a flag or something, there are thieves who will run your line and take your fish, I have even had my trot line stolen on a couple occasions.

Id rather use Jugs on a lake. Trot Lines are usually in rivers and sreams where they can take up a big area. I just use milk jugs, bleach jugs, about anything thats empty when im making them. I dont buy those fancy things, they are for rich people. A milk jug works perfectly. For bait, try catching some bluegill and cut them up. Yo can also use the whole fish, but thats when you get big ones. You can also catch monsters on chunks, so try both and see what happens. Ive caught a 55 lber on a 1/3 of a bluegill.

juggin you uaually foat them freely and a trot line is set in certain spot!
Not sure they are all getting 60lb'ers are they?
If it is legal I would rather jug fish than line fish because I can set my jug lines for deep or shallow water in lakes for a fixed postion.
